Coming Soon: The Overlook Hour

The Overlook creatures are preparing themselves for a journey, and I don't mean to Monsterpalooza...

Coaxed by Clark Little, several of the creatures plan to venture out of print and into the studio to record a weekly podcast. The details are being worked out, but so far we know that episodes will be fairly brief, about an hour long. They will feature guests, interviews, reviews - the possibilities are endless. But who will be involved in this project?

Armed with wit and weapons, our hosts are a very mixed bag of personalities: Clark Little (top left), KillDozer (top right), Dabbles (bottom left), and Lord Battle (bottom right). Cornelius also plans to make an appearance but he doesn't talk much.

I'll keep you guys updated as things develop so stay tuned. And if you'd like to be a guest in the future, just let us know!

Treasures From The ComiCombs Issue 35: Spawn Kills Everyone!, The Hunt, Southern Bastards

Welcome back! Our third of five Wednesdays this month is a bit of a slow one. Since DC has gone Bi-Monthly on their main hero titles, they continue to dominate with tons of great content. Not to be outdone, Image continues to release new content on a weekly basis for fans of any genre. Today I have a few noteworthy books to check out from the latter publisher as well as two new titles going head to head in this week’s duel review.

Spawn Kills Everyone! One Shot (Image)

The social justice warriors and Marvel fanboys aren’t too happy with this based on the preview pages that were released. An interesting art style was chosen for this title and seems to poke fun at a few books from the big two. Whether this is meant to stir things up or it’s just something fun for the fans, there’s no denying Spawn's dominance. With 264 issues and counting and no reboots, Spawn doesn’t seem like it’s slowing down. I’m excited for this one shot!

The Hunt #2 (Image)

If you’re looking for a new book that sets itself apart from the rest, look no further. The Hunt brings Irish Mythology to the modern day. The first issue set something up that looks to be worth the monthly pull. If you’re new to this one, you’re only one issue behind so don’t be afraid to pick this up.

Demonic #1 (Image)

Demonic is a brand new #1 about a detective who sells his soul to save his family. This one definitely has me interested, especially after last week’s duel review featuring Fatale. Although it’s far too early to compare this to Fatale as a whole, Demonic seems to be walking a similar line and promises something pretty cool so check this one out!
----------------------------------------------------------------

When talking about the best writers, Jason Aaron is a name that is sure to come up. Aside from writing one of my favorite Punisher runs to date, he’s currently writing a few different books, most notably, the amazing Star Wars series from Marvel and Southern Bastards.

Southern Bastards (Image)

Southern Bastards has gotten Aaron nominated for a number of Eisner Awards and even won him a few. This is a book that has been on my radar since its initial release but one I have just recently read. I’m not a big football fan but it’s a huge thing in the south and a big part of this book. Don’t let that turn you off though, there’s also more violence, sex and crime than you can ask for. On top of great writing, the art is excellent. Jason Latour has an awesome panel layout throughout this series and no panel is wasted. This series is a must read!
----------------------------------------------------------

It’s time again for us to get acquainted with two more books going head to head this week in our duel review. This week is a bit of a weird one but these two books share common ground in that they both take place in the classroom. This week it’s Deadly Class VS Assassination Classroom.

Deadly Class Vol. 1

“It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is 'Dismemberment 101,' and his crush has a double-digit body count.

Welcome to the most brutal high school on earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At Kings Dominion School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical.”

Assassination Classroom Vol. 1

This description requires a bit of an explantion. An alien came to earth but not before destroying the moon. The alien stated that it would destroy the Earth after a year unless a junior high class can kill it and it. Naturally, the alien became the teacher of this class and is teaching them how to kill it.

“Meet the would-be assassins of class 3-E: Sugino, who let his grades slip and got kicked off the baseball team. Karma, who's doing well in his classes but keeps getting suspended for fighting. And Okuda, who lacks both academic and social skills, yet excels at one subject: chemistry. Who has the best chance of winning that reward? Will the deed be accomplished through pity, brute force or poison...? And what chance does their teacher have of repairing his students' tattered self-esteem?”
---------------------------------------------------

That’s all for this week. Be sure to pick up one, or if you feel adventurous, all four of my recommendations from Image. And come back next week for the results of the duel review. Don’t forget to support your local shop!

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Session 9, Microwave Massacre and Angry Birds

August 16th 2016

Our favorite day of the week returns. There is not many new films out this week though; with fall TV season premieres on the horizon many TV series seasons are being released just in time to catch up. Scream Factory is on a roll and this week releases cult classic Session 9 for the first time on Bluray. Session 9 is a must pickup for me for sure. Arrow Video this week releases the campy and fun 80's film Microwave Massacre. A few of the Overlook creatures took a field trip to see this at the Roxie theater last week and we loved it. If you haven't already, don't forget to check out out review here. Microwave Massacre is one I also look forward to picking up and checking out the bonus features for. The main retailer release today is animated comedy Angry Birds, which is based on the mobile game that was pretty popular - it spun off a TV series as well. Target will carry a bonus disc edition filled with even more bonus features, as well as wearable Angry Bird eyebrows.  On the TV series front is season 7 of The Vampire Diaries which is airing its final season this fall on the CW. Gotham Season 2 is also out today. I've heard this show has gotten really good but I've seen a few episodes from its first season so I am looking forward to catching up in the near future. ABC and Disney's Once Upon A Time Season 5 is the last of TV on Bluray this week with its 6th season airing this fall as well. So what will you be buying, renting or skipping this week? Let us know in the comments. Also don't forget to check out our Instagram page here, and our Facebook page here. We love the conversation and talking all things horror. The Overlook Theatre Reviews: Microwave Massacre

7 of 7 viewers "Liked" "Microwave Massacre" (USA, 1983)
Here's what the creatures had to say:

Math Mage - "I was expecting a straight forward slasher film or perhaps a technology gone wrong story; either would have been fine. I was not expecting a crude sex comedy where Ralph Kramden finally snaps, kills his wife and becomes a cannibal. This was a pleasant surprise however, as the film proved to be quite funny. The microwave itself was underutilized (except for an ending that modern viewers should't be surprised by), in fact the film would have been just as good without it." - 3.5 Stars

Lord Battle - "As a kid combing through the horror section in a rental store, I learned early on that you can't judge a film by its cover, even though you kinda had to. The trick was in what the box didn't show you. If there was a lack of images on the back, that means it's was boring. If the case was lenticular, had raised art, or lit-up, that meant the film sucked. And if they used "Massacre" in the title (and it wasn't The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), that meant there was no massacre. Microwave Massacre's VHS release contained all 3 warning signs I learned to avoid as a kid. 10 year old me would have hated this film. So how was it as an adult? Microwave Massacre plays like a Troma film starring Rodney Dangerfield." - 3.5 Stars

KillDozer - "One of the best examples of VHS rental store bait and switch art you have ever seen. The VHS box for this movie was the stuff legends were made of, with blinking microwave lights and all! This film stars the man who voiced the classic animated Frosty the Snowman TV special and it's called Microwave Massacre, what else do you need? If you like your grindhouse goofy and crude, then look no further because this film serves up Airplane style one-liners in between cheesy gore and of course boobs (lots of boobs)! A true cult classic for those who know how to have fun and enjoy being in on the joke." 3.5 Stars (Worth sharing with others and totally worth screening with a crowd)

Huntress - "With a name like Microwave Massacre, it may seem like this movie has no surprises, but I definitely didn't expect a lot of what happened or that I'd be laughing as much as I did. This movie is really funny! And not in the "so bad it's good" kind of way either; there are some genuinely hilarious scenes in Microwave Massacre that build with the story. The acting may have been campy and exaggerated but it complimented the plot very well. I can see why this has a cult following," - 4.5 Stars

Dabbles - "Microwave Massacre, the name in itself should let you know what you're getting into. I can't believe this movie was made and that I had never seen it. It is very exaggerated and awesome. Everything  was so colorful and unbelievable that it was hard not to laugh." - 5 Stars

The Impostor - "From the stiff corny one-liners to its silly gags and setups, Microwave Massacre is one of the best bad movies I've ever seen. It has a very unique premise and if you love indie horror comedy you will love this film. Microwave Massacre is definitely in the "so bad it's good" category. Overall fun film I'd highly recommend. Enjoy it with a few beers, it does add to the experience." - 5 Stars

The Great Hornito - "Microwave Massacre was nothing like I expected but in a good way. It was like an 80's boner comedy horror and a Mel Brooks movie all in one. It had really funny quick witted dialogue and plenty of big bouncing boobs to entertain the horny Hornito. Seeing it at the Roxie made it even better." - 4.5 Stars

The Overlook Theatre Final Rating*
(Below is for after you've seen the film)

The Roxie Theater did a great job of selecting videos that illustrated our strange history with this relic from the nuclear age. So in honor of the awesome night we had at the theater, Huntress and I did some digging and came up with a few videos and articles to form our own curated bundle of stories about the revolutionary microwave! Enjoy.

The microwave oven was accidentally invented in 1946 by Percy Spenser. As common as they are in the US, it's weird to think that less than 5% of the population in India owns one. (Article here)

In 2012, a Sacramento woman was accused and convicted of putting her baby in the microwave, which was because of a "seizure fit" according to her attorney. The stomach and intestines of the child appeared to be cooked through, which was consistent with the effects of a microwave. (Article here)

Microwaves were banned in Russia in 1976, due to their negative health effects and damage to food cooked in them. The ban was not lifted until the Perestroika in the mid 90's. (Article here)

A girl did an experiment where she watered one plant with microwaved water and another with purified water, and posted pictures of her results. It is being questioned because she may have microwaved the water in a plastic cup, skewing the results. All sides of the experiment can be found by searching "microwave water plant."

The Microwave Age playlist can be found on our YouTube channel, which was just launched today. Check it out here.

The Overlook Theatre materialized in the Roxie Theatre for a screening on  8/12/2016
*Based on the star ratings turned in by character reviewers, others viewed and got to "Dislike" or "Like" but that does not effect the rating.

The Overlook Theatre Store is Now Open!

Hey everyone! We've got some cool news to announce this morning... The Overlook Theatre's Big Cartel store is officially open! This has been a long time coming and we hope to add new, limited items to it regularly.

Currently, we have a couple of the shirts listed with the price of shipping included in the total. Some of you guys have already seen the tagged and bagged Terror Tuesday Goes to Camp shirts (and we've seen them on some familiar faces at the Alamo Drafthouse) but there are also some lesser seen designs.
