Treasures From the ComiCombs Issue #36: Grimm Tales of Terror, Lake of Fire, X-O Manowar

Welcome back! August continues to be a pretty slow month for releases. I’ve done some digging and have come up with a few recommendations for you to pick up this week, followed by the winner of last week’s duel review! First, I wanted to take a quick moment to mention that after years without a Comic Con, San Francisco is finally getting one back. I’ll be there for sure so if any of you Bay Area comic fans are free, it takes place the weekend of September 2-4.
Tickets are available now!

Clean Room #11 (Vertigo)

One of the more original titles that began publication last year, Clean Room has been a consistently good read. Gail Simone has done a great job keeping her readers on edge with this one. Issue #11 brings us the end of the second story arc and this one promises a “grisly conclusion”.

Grimm Tales of Terror Vol.2 #11
(Zenescope Entertainment)

Though some stories are hit or miss, Grimm Tales of Terror is always a fun read. This week we get the Vanishing Hitchhiker!
“A hitchhiker in desperate need of a ride may find himself in for more than he bargained for in this twisted tale.”

Lake of Fire #1 (Image)

I’m pretty excited for this one. An alien mining craft crash lands in a remote wilderness in 1220 AD and a group of crusaders are the only hope to stop the bloodthirsty predators. This is definitely worth checking out, I mean come on, Crusaders Vs Aliens!
------------------------------------------------------------

When Acclaim shut down in 2004, all publication for the Valiant lineup of comics ceased. In 2005, the rights to the Valiant library were acquired and the company was branded Valiant Entertainment. Seven years later, Valiant Entertainment relaunched their universe with four titles, the first being X-O Manowar.

X-O Manowar (Valiant)

Written by Robert Venditti and with art by Cary Nord, X-O Manowar had a tremendous launch. Vendittis' writing on this title is some of the best of his career and while the art has changed hands, it has remained top notch. X-O Manowar tells the story of Aric of Dacia, heir to the throne of the Visigoth people. Aric is abducted by a race of aliens known as the Vine and forced to be their slave. After years of captivity, Aric leads a revolt against the Vine and steals a powerful relic, Shanhara, the sentient X-O Manowar armor. Aric bonds with the armor and an amazing story follows.
X-O is the longest running title from Valiant and sadly Aric's story will be wrapping up in September with issue #50. There is a lot of great content to enjoy but I recommend starting from the beginning.
---------------------------------------------------------

Last week Deadly Class went up against Assassination Classroom. As much as I wanted to like both of these books, there was a clear winner.

Deadly Class Vol. 1

This one wasn’t even close, Deadly Class won by a landslide. These two books share a common setting and they take the outcasts and put them in the spotlight but the similarities end there. Where Deadly Class takes a darker route and does a good job developing its characters, Assassination Classroom puts comedy on the center stage. While the premise of Assassination Classroom is dark, none of that really translates into any of the first volume. The chapters feel disjointed and there really isn’t any character development so the cast feels bland in addition to not being very likeable.
Rick Remender's writing in Deadly Class is excellent but the art team of Wes Craig and Lee Loughridge was the major highlight for me. The panel layout is creative and gives the action scenes a real sense of movement that’s not often seen in comics. This book gives me vibes of Harry Potter and that’s not such a bad thing; it works very well. Assassination Classroom was a disappointment but Deadly Class exceeded all expectations and that’s why it’s this week’s winner.
----------------------------------------------------------

That brings us to the end of this week's issue. Make sure to pick up something cool from your local shop and come back next week for more comics to feed your appetite!

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Clown, Psycho IV and Ash Vs. Evil Dead

August 23rd 2016

Bluray Tuesday returns! It's a big week for new releases in everything from films to TV seasons. Clown, which was released last year and released on Bluray over seas, finally gets a Bluray release here in the states. Clown was a well done horror film and I will definitely be buying this. Scream Factory releases Psycho IV from director Mick Garris (Masters of Horror, Sleepwalkers, etc). I saw this when I was younger and will be refreshing my memory on this one sometime this week. The biggest mainstream film this week is The Huntsman Winter's War, a prequel to 2012's Snow White and The Huntsman. Best Buy will carry this in two Steelbook forms, both with the same cover art. The first steel book is standard Bluray/Dvd and the second is the very first new 4K steelbook release. On the TV series front we have lots of horror related shows hitting shelves today so we can get caught up for the new seasons start back up. My favorite of the bunch is Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Best Buy will carry an exclusive steelbook packaging that will be super rare so be in stores at opening. Currently, Best Buy's website does not have a shipping option. If you're not lucky on the steelboook, its standard release does come with an awesome lenticular slipcover. The next big series released is Season Six of The Walking Dead. I'm counting the days to its season 7 premiere in October and am looking forward to re-watching this season as well as the extended and unedited finale, which is only on this release. Target pulls through, continuing its steelbook exclusive and I will be picking this up first thing. Many retailer exclusives today which gets kinda expensive. So what will you be buying, renting, or just skipping this week? Let us know in the comments. Also don't forget to check out our Instagram page here, and our Facebook page here. We love the conversations and talking all things horror. Speaking of all things horror keep an eye out for The Overlook Hour our upcoming weekly podcast which is pretty exciting. Check out more details here. Until next week!

Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations (which include ace hacker Kevin Mitnick and Tesla/SpaceX entrepreneur Elon Musk) that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works—from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships. Subjected to my reverse edit technique, the film(s) require the viewer to reorient from their usual movie viewing experience. It is like a never-ending flashback, and fun to watch."

Upcoming Events in the Bay

Hey everyone, I have a couple of reminders of upcoming events that you still have time to get tickets for and catch pretty soon. These have come up on Screenings in the Bay, but it's always nice to have a refresher.

Sunday 21st @ 9:35pm (1hr 31min)
Wednesday 24th @ 2:20pm
Comedy/ Crime/ Horror (IMDB)
"The Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling freak-show, is a front for a band of psychotic kidnappers and murderers."

We attended the Friday night screening, which was introduced by John Waters himself. Seeing this newly restored, trash cinema film in a big beautiful theatre is just too cool of an experience to pass up!

Playing Until the 27th
"Don't miss the West Coast Premiere of this New York Off-Broadway Already-Cult-Classic Stage Show! If you thought SHOWGIRLS the movie was a riot, wait until you experience the live stage show...! And with Peaches Christ in the role of Crystal, accompanying the incredibly gifted April Kidwell as Nomi, you know it's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime blend of Peaches Christ parody and this utterly wild stage show, the likes of which may never be seen again...!"

KillDozer just saw this show last week and recommends everyone (of age) check it out. His review can be found here.

Early screening Thursday Sept 1st @ 7pm (2hrs 10min)
Horror/ Thriler (IMDB)
"Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns."

This early screening will also include a Q&A with Rob Zombie, as well as premieres of two new music videos. The film is actually set to be released September 16th.

KillDozer Reviews ShowGirls! The Musical

Only a true genius would pair the writing talent that brought us Basic Instinct and Flash Dance (Joe Eszterhas), with the visionary directing that brought us Robo Cop and Total Recall (Paul Verhoeven), and use the combined efforts to create the hyper sexual, over the top, exploitation dance film ShowGirls! Only an even greater genius would bring a "classic" such as ShowGirls to a live audience and set this truly loved cult gem up as a musical.

The West Coast premiere of ShowGirls the Musical is happening now in San Francisco at the beloved Victoria Theatre and as the film's tag line states, "leave your inhibitions at the door". From the moment our glamorous hostess stepped out onto the stage, with hair 5 feet tall and every raunchy joke at the ready to welcome us, we knew we were in for an unforgettable night. The theatre was packed and as cheesy as it sounds you could feel the excitement in the air.

The musical numbers were extremely fun and cleverly written each with their own commentary, sometimes about the ridiculousness of the situation and some times about the person who actually wrote it that way. The dancing sequences should be experienced in person as words can not describe the beauty and skill that goes into creating amazingly unforgettable choreography. The cast blew my mind as each of them stood out in their own way. My personal favorite was "The Gay" whose performance brought the house down. A total crowd pleaser, especially if your audience is full of weirdos like me who take pride in being so, and get pleasure from being part of the joke, see beauty in the absurd, and love that which others would call trash. Overall, this was another amazing example of Peaches Christ Productions skill and dedication. I highly recommend it for EVERYONE (except children because they won't get the humor :) ).

The show will be at the Victoria Theatre through the 27th, with discounted tickets available on Goldstar.
You can find out more about the production by visiting their site.
