Bluray Tuesday!

The final Bluray Tuesday of November has arrived. A few new Blurays are released today to catch the Black Friday sales this week. Some great early Black Friday deals are now going on through Amazon, Best Buy and Target now ahead of the big sale that starts Thursday evening/Friday. On the new release front is action comedy American Ultra and action thriller No Escape. Only horror new release out is A Christmas Horror Story from Image Entertainment. I'm a big fan of Christmas horror and look forward to checking this out this holiday season. Scream/Shout Factory releases older catalog titles for the first time on Bluray Ghost Town and Blood and Lace both of these I haven't seen but seem interesting and look forward to seeing these in the near future. Overlooked Crowd Funding: Bring Back MST3K

The campaign to bring back Mystery Science Theater 3000 is probably the most expensive one I've seen yet, but in the first week that it's been active, it has already reached beyond its minimum goal! There was no doubt in my mind that this campaign would reach the 2 million it needed to get the ball rolling on production, exceed it even. In this case, exceeding the minimum is really how the fans will get the most out of this project. I wasn't clear on this at first, but 2 million will cover three full length episodes, but if we want to see a full 12 episode season, the campaign will need to raise more than double the minimum. Which sounds like lot! 

Luckily, the man behind the dream, Joel Hodgson, could not be more transparent with how the money is to be spent. On the campaign page he breaks everything down into reasonable terms, and tells you exactly how much of the take is to be delegated to each episode. He also posted a quick break down while doing an AMA around the time the campaign launched.

When all the one time fees are paid off, each episode would get 12% of the total, which comes to about 250K. That's a bit more than episodes cost to make in the 90's, but a reasonable bit. After all, everything costs more than it did in the 90's. And keep in mind that each episode gets cheaper to make, since many of the costs will already have been covered. 

I mentioned earlier that Joel fielded questions during an AMA interview about a week ago, and you can find the whole thing here. I read through and picked a couple of the highlights:

Q: I'm curious... are you planning on featuring modern movies on the new version of the show, or are you going to focus on 50s-90s films, like how it was originally? Kind of hoping for the latter.

A: I think we're gonna go after everything. But I have to tell you, I think movies from the 70's and 80's are part of what makes MST3K, MST3K. Those movies will be what feels familiar to people. There's just so many of them! We'll slowly work our way upstream. There are definitely some movies from after 1999 that are ripe for riffing.Thanks for your support and suggestions. There's a lot of moving pieces to this puzzle, but I'm excited to see how it turns out too!

Q: If you were trapped on a desert island (or space station of love) alone and could only take one movie, what movie would it actually be?

A: If I could only take one movie, I guess it would be the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night." I'm just astonished at how talented the Beatles were, not only musically but comedically. For being in their early twenties, those guys were incredible. I mean, who does that?

Q: You guys riffed a lot of shorts in addition to the movies. Are you guys going to focus more on films, or keep the mix that you had? Also, any plans to riff The Room? "I did not hit her! I did not- oh, hi Mark!"

A: We'd love to do more shorts. They're such a key part of MST3K. I'm not sure whether they'll be part of this new season, but I'd love to include more of them in the future.
We love The Room, but I think MST3K does best when we steer away from movies that are famous for being bad. That's why we never did "Plan 9 From Outer Space" during our original run.
To me, watching Mystery Science Theater is kind of like going to a haunted house on the edge of town with your funny friends. It works best if you don't know what's in there.

Q: Where will these episodes be placed? Is there going to be a dedicated MST3K site to watch them, are you going to bring this to a network to air, or maybe an online platform like Netflix?

A: That's a really important question. The answer is that we don't know for sure yet. Part of the plan is to see how many people get excited about the Kickstarter campaign and want MST3K back, so that we can talk with broadcast networks and digital platforms about bringing MST3K back for another thirty years. There, I said it. Another 30 years.
I don't know who it will be, but we've already gotten some excited phone calls today from people in Hollywood who are watching what's happening. So it's working! Keep Circulating the URL, and maybe the next season of MST3K will be beamed straight into your eyes!
One other thing. It's really important to me that backers who help us make a new season get to ENJOY that season without spending more money, so all of the rewards above $100 include HD downloads of all of the new episodes with no DRM or copy protection. I just think that's important. It's the right thing to do. It's proper.

Q: I'm curious about how much of the reboot is in terms of the background story/host segment portions. I mean, will the old show and characters be referenced or alluded to? Or is this a hard reboot where everything that happened prior doesn't exist?

A: Everything that happened in the old MST3K definitely happened. The show will continue in that same timeline. This isn't St. Elsewhere, and it's not the new Temperatures Rising starring Paul Lynde. For example, the new Mad will be the offspring of Dr. Clayton Forrester, and the grandchild of Pearl Forrester, and therefore heir to the MST3K Experiment. Hope that puts you at ease.

One of the concerns that came up during the interview has actually been addressed already, and that was the mystery surrounding the host and mads. As the minimum goal got closer and closer, it was announced that Jonah Ray will be the new host of MST3K. 

The two met three years ago, while recording an episode of the Nerdist podcast, and then talked comedy outside of the studio, hitting it off immediately. And Jonah is also a fan of MST3K, so rest assured that he will be in favor of preserving its traditions and integrity. But even if you aren't crazy about this choice, keep in mind that he is not meant to be the host for as long as the show will run; hosts were always intended to be recast every so often, but the show was cancelled before that became obvious. 

Now, let's take a gander at the potential rewards that this campaign has to offer. All donations grant you access to exclusive updates and also come with a token of appreciation in the form of a 2" membership card. So, even if you can only give 10 bucks, you won't be left empty handed.

Affordable: 

• $25 is all it will take to get access to the live streaming of the first episode, complete with movie sign sounds. Great for those who have waited long enough!
• $35 - just another $10 and you can just download the whole episode and watch it whenever you want, which is a better choice for those who battle with their internet connections. 

Under $100: 

• $75 - this is probably more than you'd pay for a regular coffee mug, but this is an MST3K coffee mug, and it will be exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign. It also comes with collectible and easily frame-able postcards featuring movie poster art work. 
• $100 - at this level, you will be able to download all of the new episodes of MST3K, be it three, five, or twelve. They'll all be yours. 

Breaking the Piggy Bank:

• $200 - Most collectors I know prefer to have a physical copy, rather than a digital download of the things they like, and MST3K has those people in mind with this perk. At this level, you can get the official box set, which you will only be able to get through this campaign. It will include exclusive backer content and will be available on bluray or DVD. It sounds like a lot, but you will also get all the previous perks which definitely makes it worth the money. 
• $250 - VHS is back! And even though most people have long since gotten rid of their VCRs, tapes are still fun to display. That's partially why this is such a cool perk, you get a collectible VHS of the pilot episode but it also comes with an MST3K patch! This also comes with many of the previous perks to sweeten the deal. 

There are several options for attending premieres in different cities, but I won't get into those. And keep in mind that every perk comes with a bundle of the previous perks, which is why it seems a bit pricey. And Kickstarter does not actually charge you until the end of the campaign, so if you need a little more time to save some money, you have just under three weeks. 

And as with all campaigns, this one has a perk that deserves some special attention...

Honorable Mention goes to the $10,000 perk, which was limited to two, but still has one available. It comes with both Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo robots in the flesh! And again, that comes with a lot more that just those two.

A Musical Adventure at the Phoenix Theatre: "The Toxic Avenger Musical"

What's a monster kid to do when stuck out in Arizona on business? Easy!!! Seek out other friendly and talented monster kids! Every town has its nerds and when you get amazing theatre nerds and combine them with horror nerd concepts like Lloyd Kaufman's 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger, beautiful things can happen. My wife Ruby caught wind that this production was taking place 10 minutes away from our hotel so of course Lord Battle and I ran to the nearest computer and bought whatever tickets we could find for the performance that night.

The Phoenix Theatre web site had this to say -"Our Unlikely hero, Toxie, a mutant freak with superhero strength and a heart bigger than Newark, will battle for the cleanup of the Turnpike. Add in a charming love story, a dash of corruption and stiletto-wearing back up singers and you will have an uproarious, R-rated rock musical that will have you falling in 'Hot Toxic Love.' For mature audiences only."

I can honestly say that the Phoenix Theatre went all out with this production. With an insanely small cast of 5 and an incredible set design, Toxic Avenger never looked or sounded better. The music was funny, well sung, amazingly un P.C., and backed by a shredding band who took every chance to show off their metal skills. I was blown away by the entire cast and their ability to change so quickly from one character to the next in seconds, sometimes even changing into little old white ladies, even though they are full grown black male actors. The practical stage effects were fun and well designed with limbs being torn off and spines being removed. The most shocking part was that the sold out crowd that night, who mostly consisted of older theatre goers, clapped to the music and laughed along with everyone else, proving yet again there's a little monster kid in all of us. If you live in the Phoenix, Arizona area you should take every chance you can to support this theatre and its amazing productions. If I had more time I would have seen it again!

Bluray Tuesday!

Bluray Tuesday is back. This week, our favorite day of the week is super light, which is good since Black Friday is just around the corner. Scream / Shout Factory releases Troll / Troll 2 for the first time on bluray and the first 5,000 come with a bonus film called Best Worst Movie. I'm definitely picking this one up, these are so bad that they are good. I will be re-watching them this week. Biggest main release this week is The Man From U.N.C.L.E, which I haven't heard much about and I'm sure will drop in price soon. The inevitable Hobbit extended edition box set is released today, just in time for the holidays. It's perfect for all those who like the uniform box set with all three films in their collections. The Black Friday ads are out for most major retailers like Target and Best Buy on their respective sites. You can check out all their sales on blurays early. Bluray Tuesday is here once again. This week beings us a few new titles and a few re releases, and it's right around the corner from Black Friday. Target's ad was released today and there are lots of great deals on blurays. Terminator Genisys is the biggest release this week and has a few retailer exclusives. Target will be the only ones to carry the Terminator Genisys exclusive steelbook, and Best Buy will have their edition with an exclusive bonus disc. Surprise hit comedy Trainwreck is released today and will come with an exclusive bonus disc only at Best Buy as well. The only horror titled released today is Bound to Vengeance, which is released by Scream Factory. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just around the corner and hits theaters December 18 but today we also get Star Wars steelbooks for the first six films. Book Wyrm's Experience With the Attack on Titan Live Action Movies (Not spoiler free)

You may or may not have heard of the Japanese anime series, Attack on Titan by now, but it has taken America by storm. You can find Attack on Titan merchandise anywhere from Hot Topic to FYE and you can watch it streaming on Netflix now or when it aired on Adult Swim for anime Saturday's. I have seen people from kids to the elderly wearing the iconic scouting legion jacket and people's excited reactions to the pop figures, tee shirts, and other merchandise Hot Topic carries. I used to be one of these people caught up in the excitement that an anime I liked actually had merchandise in America that was easily attainable and didn't involve $20 shipping or a trip down into SF's Japantown to buy. I used to eagerly await the next chapter every month and would watch the anime religiously as my pile of figures featuring characters like Levi, Eren and Mikasa accrued. But one day it just stopped. I started resenting everyone that liked the series, I became ashamed of my chibi attack on titan belt, I stopped caring about the new chapter updates, and I decided the entire series sucked. I felt (and still do) that the characters lack substance, that it never answers any questions brought up early in the series, and that it is super over hyped up over here. Essentially, I grew out of it.

Months after my escape from the fandom my sister came into my room to let me know that the Japantown theater would be screening the Attack on Titan live action movies. I had heard some things about it but not much more than it would be live action with CG titans. As soon as I heard about it I immediately looked it up and tickets were actually sort of selling out so I decided what the heck and bought four tickets two for each day as they were screening each movie on different dates. I figured nothing could go wrong but as soon as I mentioned what I had done on facebook all of the comments I got in response were along the lines of, "don't get your hopes up" or "get ready for colossal disappointment." (Get it, because the colossal titan???) So that wasn't very reassuring. The reason why I was so willing to spend almost $70 on these movie tickets ($15 each not including tax) was mainly because it meant two trips to Japantown and an excuse to watch another movie in their awesome New People Cinema theater which I had only been to once before to see the Naruto movie, The Last.

And so, the day of the first movie approached. My friend and I made our way to Japantown, got there around four/five-ish and wandered around the mall buying things and eating as we saw fit until our showtime of 7 o'clock approached. As we arrived at the theater we really had no expectations, we each had strange Japanese snacks in hand and the surrounding group seemed as excited as we were so things were set. And then the movie happened.

I cannot begin to describe the horror that was Attack on Titan part one. The titans all looked super scary and extremely realistic but that was not a good thing to me. They were so horrifying it made you want to laugh and they each looked like blown up humans.

Titans aside the storyline was really strange. A lot of the well known characters from the original series did not appear or were modified and had their names changed. The one character that I believed stayed true to their manga/anime counterpart was Hanji Zoe, the crazy titan loving member of the scouting legion, who screamed and yelled about titans throughout the movie to an uncomfortable extent. Mikasa was transformed into an Eren fangirl who also became involved with the Levi-esque character and was a victim of domestic abuse. Armin was virtually nonexistent in both films and Jean and Sasha were the only other two characters from the original series chosen to appear in the film. The first film doesn't deviate too far from the general plot of the original story and ends around where Eren becomes a titan for the first time. I really enjoyed the scenes of titans feasting on people, especially when they first break into the town and massacre everyone. This part left the audience in shock to say the least. Another part that got a strong reaction from the audience was when everyone had just embarked on their first mission outside the walls and it was their first night out so they were taking a break and restocking and the like. Eren had gone into this cave and was chatting with one of his comrades and all of a sudden we hear moaning and they turn over to see two other people having sex on the floor together. The girl of that couple speaks up and says what we're all thinking "Hey isn't this weird? They're watching us" and the guy replies "Nah, don't worry they're not looking" and they continue without further complaint. I guess this turned the girl Eren was talking to on as she leans over to him and asks "Hey Eren, would you like to be my daughters father" (She's a single mom just for future reference) and as he is clearly taken aback by this she leans forward, rips open her shirt kisses him and says "Do you like single moms?" As she is forcing herself on him an eye opens up behind them and a titan emerges from nowhere and eats the single mom. This shocked everyone in the audience, but it was by far my favorite part of the movie.

As for the second movie, Attack on Titan: End of the World, I had no expectations at all. I was ready for another bad movie and I hoped it would make me laugh as much as the first one did. I was wrong again though as this one felt like it had way less action, more confusing story, and more questions that went unanswered. Basically we find out the Levi character has been the bad guy all along planning to destroy all the walls and let the titans in and that the world was actually a post-apocalyptic one. The story behind that is that in our current day and age humans created titans, it was common for people to be titans, but then one day things went terribly wrong and people started becoming titans out of nowhere and eating people. So every titan in the world was actually a human (this is slightly similar to the original story as far as I know) and that explains all the random technology that was left behind inside the walls like the nuke that's mentioned in the first movie. Apparently the government was witholding this information from everyone so that they would stay inside the walls and have no desire to leave them and so that makes the government guy a bad guy as well. It just so happens that both the Levi character and the government guy are both titans, the armored and colossal ones respectively, leading to a fight between giants at the end. Jean ultimately gets killed off (I believe this is because there was no girl character for him to end up with) and Levi helps take down the colossal titan with Eren and Mikasa. Hanji even gets to blow stuff up with and RPG. One part of this movie that really really really bothered me was when Levi captures Eren and takes him into this future room where he explains what happened in the past and he uses an Apple TV and they have a jukebox and all this technology and it just felt so untrue to the original story. They also change clothes with no explanation and Levi and Mikasa kiss. At the end after everyone has been defeated the go to the top of the wall and see the ocean and birds are flying and everyone's paired up and happy, Eren has Mikasa, Armin has Sasha, and Hanji has her gun. (I'm not joking)

(Just imagine that but without the guy in the cloak or the guy next to him)

All in all I have a love hate relationship with these two movies. Maybe anime should just stop trying to make the transition to live action. Especially an anime involving giants who eat people that can fly through the air. I thought the movies as movies were good but as something trying to relate to Attack on Titan I thought they were terrible and should not exist. I will however be buying them whenever they make their way to America on Blu Ray so maybe that tells you all you need to know.

TLDR: The Attack on Titan Movies were really weird.

Bluray Tuesday!

Bluray Tuesday is back! I hope everyone had a great Halloween, sad to see it end but we horror fans do celebrate all year long, of course. Back to our favorite day of the week which brings a few titles out today. First up is one of my favorites this year, The Final Girls. We were able to find a theater playing this a few weeks ago and we all loved it. I'm pretty excited to add it to my collection this week. Scream Factory / Shout Factory releases two new films on bluray thus week, Bloodsucking Bastards and Stung, both fun films that I would definitely recommend watching for sure. The biggest release all around is Disney and Pixar's Inside Out, which has been getting great reviews all around. I will probably check this out sometime soon too. And rest of the new releases are thrillers Tiger House and The Diabolical, and with comedy reboot/sequel Vacation, which is actually pretty funny but I'm sure this title will be a lot cheaper in the next few weeks for Black Friday.
