Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): Arrival, The Love Witch, Beyond the Gates

We're at the top of a new week and a new month, the Halloween season is officially over, and the days are about to get a lot shorter... Why not spend your dark evenings at the movies? 

This is another eventful week in the bay area and although this is the last stretch of the Another Hole in the Head film festival, it's definitely going out in a high note. Every one of these last three days has something interesting playing and several films will also have special guests in attendance. 

Outside of the New People building, the rest of our indie theatres are also tending to our beastly needs by showing a variety of monster movies, mystery movies, and nostalgic gems. Read on for details.

Bookwyrm Doesn't Understand "Ajin" but Recommends it Anyway



While looking for a new horror anime to watch for this week, I decided to check out some of what was on Netflix as I almost never watch anime on there mostly because I use Crunchyroll to watch anime. Ajin was recommended to me by Netflix because of my interest in things like Attack on Titan, Death Note, and Tokyo Ghoul which are all pretty standard horror anime so I figured I would add it to my list and check it out later. I was initially excited to watch it because it is a Netflix original anime and I had yet to check out what their original anime's were like. The first thing that really struck me about this show was that it wasn't a traditional anime in the sense that it wasn't in 2D. I can't really describe the animation style, the best thing I came up with was if you're familiar with the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm video games and how the characters look in those, then that is how the entire anime is done. I personally think it was really cool and innovative as I have never seen a show that looked the way this one does, but I also found myself being distracted from the story at times as I just wanted to look at the characters (and also wanted to play this as a video game).

To give you an idea of what this anime is about, basically there are some humans in the world that have regenerative abilities and are unable to die because they will just come back to life. These people have been labeled as "Ajin" and are generally feared by society. The main character, Nagai Kei, just wants to be an upstanding human in society and is aiming to be a doctor. He studies every chance he gets and surrounds himself with people he (and his overbearing mother) deem to be acceptable in society and that have the potential to further his own gain. One day when Kei is too busy looking at his phone he gets hit by a car and is killed. And then he gets back up. People find out he is an Ajin and immediately try to capture him and turn him over to the government. The anime then focuses on him trying to live life as an Ajin, the government trying to capture and then torture the various Ajin's they come across, and the rouge group of Ajin's trying to overthrow the government. I have an issue with this anime mainly because I don't understand where the conflict stems from. All that makes the Ajin different is that they are essentially immortal. They don't eat people, they don't need to kill anyone, they are basically no different from regular humans except they can't die and they have this strange black ghost that follows them around (that most humans can't even see). Ajin are literally indistinguishable from other humans until they happen to die and come back to life. I don't really get why there is such an uproar in their community and I don't understand why they don't just coexist. I mean I guess they try and explain this because the opening scene is the first Ajin ever discovered slaughtering several African children and that makes them dangerous, but literally every Ajin in the show is just a normal person. I kind of kept thinking about how when applied to this world, Kenny McCormick from South Park would qualify as an Ajin so long story short, this anime is basically about Kenny's life if he were Japanese.

Another thing that I found really weird about this was that I didn't really like any of the characters. I couldn't sympathize with any of the sides in the anime because they all had some sort of drawback. Of course I wanted to cheer for the protagonist Kei and see him live a good life but as I kept watching I realized something. Kei is a horrible person who only wants to further himself in life and will betray anyone including his own family (but not his estranged childhood friend) to ensure his own well-being (even though he does have moments where he tries to understand other people). Then you have the humans/government who are trying to subdue and capture Ajin's. I couldn't root for them because they capture the Ajin's and then perform horrific torture on them under the guise of research. Again, I don't understand why they don't just cooperate with the Ajin's in the pursuit of science. One human even has this weird relationship with an Ajin that he keeps as his secretary and personal body guard and because I really like the secretary I hated seeing how badly he treated her. And then you have the renegade Ajin's that are attacking the human's saying they are fighting for their rights (even though the Ajin running it just wants to take over the world and murder everyone). These guys are kind of like the mafia and are just horrible people and there's no way I would want them to win. The only three characters I liked were Kai, who was the childhood friend of Kei that rushed to help him out when he was being pursued by the government and was later ditched so Kei could pursue other opportunities, Shimomura, the aforementioned Ajin working with the humans for reasons unknown to me, and Ko who is basically replacement Kai who also happens to be an Ajin and wants to take down the mafia Ajin's.

So overall I actually did enjoy this anime despite hating almost everyone in it. When the second season comes out I will definitely be watching it, and I'm kind of considering reading the manga to see what else happens and if Kai ever reappears. I would say that if you enjoyed Death Note that is what this anime felt the most similar to but kind of with a reverse Kira. I can't really put my thoughts about why that is down on paper, but maybe if you watch it you'll see what I mean. Also apparently a couple days ago it was announced that Ajin got green lit for three live action feature films, so definitely be on the lookout for those whenever they come out, I know I'm going to watch them.

Screenings in the Bay (Friday to Sunday): The Killing of America, Into the Inferno, Let Her Out

Happy Friday people! Our Halloween decorations are slowly coming down and the countdown to October may be starting all over again, but at least we still have a full year of horror movies ahead of us to keep the smile on our faces. And while this weekend is no last weekend in October, it still has some really cool titles and a lot of animation in it. This is the last weekend of Another Hole in the Head film festival, its final day will be this Wednesday the 9th. I hope you guys have at least checked it out, but if not you still have time.

Math Mage - *Spoilers* - "I dread the obligatory "20 minutes with idiots" portion of genre films. It can be done well (Slumber Party Massacre), it can be done poorly (Memorial Valley), it can be done too well (Final Girls), and it can be done very poorly (american Godzilla [either one really]). But, never before have I wanted more of it. This film is short (about 75 minutes) and it could have used another 10-15 minutes of character development. In a film about trying to change yourself through extreme measures it seems strange that we never get to see who any of these people are much less who they want to be. The character who we get the most insight into (notably not the main character), is initially portrayed as being a shallow manipulative person who lies to make herself seem less pathetic, and when we get the reveal of her "real" background...she's a shallow manipulative person who lies to seem less pathetic and craves outside validation. Now that I think about it, this film seems really sexist. Of three female characters one is as close to a villain as we get, another is in an abusive relationship and dies from her boyfriend being a shit-head, and the third (mentioned above) has explicitly been in a number of abusive relationships. Perhaps if we got to spend more time getting to know them (or even better they spent time getting to know each other) we'd have a better movie. I was going to say that the men in the film don't fare much better (as they are universally unlikable) but at least they get screen-time and we are shown aspects of their character rather than told. (Our protagonist hesitates to put a dying rat out of its misery (calling his land-lord(?) for help despite setting the trap it's caught in), but we are simply told about the female lead's problems/motivations)" - 2 Stars

Lord Battle - "While sitting in the dark hidden theater that is the New People Cinema, I became worried that Another Hole in the Head was about to open their film fest with a quirky comedy horror featuring a secondary character from an awful sitcom. Instead I got a cleaver indie drama that manages a to elicit a rainbow of emotions from some of the most effective special effects I've seen all year." - 4 Stars

Clark Little - "Telling someone the plot of The Master Cleanse, would ruin the The Master Cleanse. And as person who holds the smallest amount of responsibility to the public regarding moving pictures, I will play my part. The blend of charm, horror, humor, heartbreak and ambiguity is nothing short of masterful. A fantastic cast led by Johnny Galecki makes this great script become a great movie. I can't say anything more positive about it. I also can't say anything more about it. Just see it.  - 4.5 Stars

KillDozer - "From writer/director Bobby Miller comes a story everyone can relate to. Almost a modern fairy tale weaver, Miller is able to bring the viewer into a situation that no matter how bizarre and impossible somehow feels real. Solid acting from a strong cast including Anjelica Houston, Kevin J. Oconner and Oliver Pratt who's performances are so natural and seamless you will swear you have met them before. Practical creature effects that will make any monster kid smile. Be aware this is not a traditional horror film but one that uses fantasy to help investigate and explore the human condition much like Being John Malcovitch. Well played comedic moments throughout and even a few unexpected shocks. This is not a film that will keep you guessing or send down the rabbit hole. The Master Cleanse is a straight forward film with a simple message that might help some deal with the monster inside each of them. A fun watch that I gladly recommend." - 3.5 Stars (collection worthy)

Trash - "When I was a little demon bitch, I had horrible taste in roughly everything, but especially movies. I watched every piece of garbage with a silly puppet in it I could find, my favorites being the Moonbeam movies, a direct-to-video for-kids spin-off of Charles Band’s Full Moon label. These rotted my brain from the inside. Prehysteria was about some kids who found tiny dinosaurs and hid them from their parents. Pet Shop was about kids who found tiny alien pets and hid them from their parents. Now I'm an adult demon bitch, and The Master Cleanse is an adult movie about adults who make little monsters out of all the shit they've been hiding from themselves. Feeling like a more mature version of this genre that will strike a chord with adults who grew up loving it, if you walk into The Master Cleanse expecting a scary monster movie, you're not gonna get it unless you're really scared of feelings and looking your problems right in the eyes. It's a weirdo heartfelt creature feature about going on a retreat to fix yourself and start anew starring Big Bangin’ Johnny Galecki who is like, just too natural acting alongside puppets. I got really caught up in it. It's simple and small, but sweet and weird, and I spent a lot of time giddy over the tiny monsters. The set is great, feeling like a lighter version of Oliver Reed’s retreat in The Brood. But unlike The Brood, it's more whimsical than horrifying, while still providing a few creepy gross out moments. Even if the metaphor of problems as monsters is a little heavy handed and the ending is a little abrupt, the simplicity is consistent and charming. It’s nice and I like it a lot. I give it 4 stars." - 4 Stars

Huntress - "The world that The Master Cleanse takes place in may look very similar to our own, but something about it seems to welcome the fantasy elements that are integrated into it; they almost didn't feel out of place, considering how quickly the characters accepted them as reality. But that was one of the most enjoyable parts of watching this film, aside from the mind blowing practical effect and in your face, yet still cleaver, analogies." - 4 Stars

Dabbles - "I never thought I would see John Galecki as anything other role than Leonard, but The Master Cleanse totally proved me wrong. The movie hit all the marks when transitioning from comical to serious, and the situation is totally relatable. If you liked The Lobster I strongly suggest you watch this when you get the chance. Also its best to come into this movie with an open mind and totally blind." - 5 Stars

The Master Cleanse isn't just a horror movie, it's a real thing and also goes by another name the Lemonade Diet. Here's what google has to say about it:

Actor Josh Brolin and Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder had a chat for the Huffington Post. Part of the conversation happened over the phone and was later posted on Huffingtonpost.com under the header:

The Overlook Hour Guest Profile: Robert Cyfi Chambers of Skate or Die Clothing

Robert Cyfi Chambers is a regular member of the Overlook's Terror Tuesday attendees but he is also an indie artist and the driving force behind Skate or Die Clothing, which is currently having a horror themed art show at the San Francisco Skate Club. 

He joined the rest of the guys in the Disney Dungeon to record episode 11 of The Overlook Hour to talk about skateboarding, sci-fi and movies. He also witnessed a slight melt down... But before you check out the episode below, let's get to know our guest. 

Overlook: Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into art.

Robert: Started drawing as a kid and was influenced by comic books like Frank Miller's Ronin, and Heavy Metal Magazine. Got into graphic design in 1990, which brought me to the bay area in '95. I faded out for awhile, it happens sometimes. Now I'm trying out being my own boss and living free. So that means doing art and riding skateboards. 

Overlook: What is your favorite movie genre and director?

Robert: SciFi and George Lucas (not his Star Wars stuff).

Overlook: What are your top 3 movies?

Robert: 'Til the End of the World, with William Hurt, Strange Days, and THX 1138.

Overlook: If you could spend the day with absolutely anyone, who would it be?

Robert: Hajme Sorayama (get some painting lessons).

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Carnage Park, Star Trek Beyond and Imperium

November 1st 2016

I'm hoping everyone had a great Halloween weekend! Now it's a new month with new blurays to add to our growing collections.
This week is pretty light to start off the month, the only horror related release is from Scream Factory titled Carnage Park starring Ashley Bell from The Last Exorcism films. The biggest film released today is Star Trek Beyond. I liked the first two in this reboot series and definitely looking forward to this one. Star Trek Beyond has a few retailer exclusives starting with a steelbook only at Best Buy, bonus disc only at Target, and 4k bluray gift set Only on Amazon. DC fans can enjoy an all new animated Batman titled Return of the Caped Crusader with original voices from the 60's live action series. Defiantly a must own for me this week. If you like graphic novels, Best Buy will carry theirs with a hardcover graphic novel. Again light week on releases but with holidays coming up and a few more exclusives coming in the next few weeks, our wallets can breathe a sigh of relief. So what will you be picking up today? The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims.
