Unlike the past couple of weeks, today's screenings in the bay highlights list is huge! We've got three new films coming to out, one of which we unfortunately are only getting on VOD for now, and a nice collection of genre across the city.
One of the most exciting new movies this week is also the one I'm the most skeptical about, and that is Slender Man. Looking past the fact that they broke up a word I'm used to seeing as a single entity, this movie is PG-13. And with the never ending supply of dumb Slenderman stuff in the atmophere, a studio film does not exactly fill me with hope that this will be anything different. But then I peeked at who was playing the titular tuxedo'd figure and somewhat changed my mind when I saw the impossibly pliable Javier Botet's name. I'm torn; on one hand PG-13 horror can sometimes be exactly what you're looking for in terms of light hearted and fun, but on the other hand Javier still could not save Mama...
Also this week, Midnites for Maniacs celebrate Alice Cooper's 70th birthday with an iconic double feature, followed by Q&A with Tom Silberkleit, local author whose father produced the second of the double feature. Terror Tuesday is a big Wes Craven title, and Robot Jox gets to see the light of day again on Weird Wednesday!

Wes Craven wrote and directed this surrealistic horror-comedy, which was inspired by a true story of parents keeping their children locked in a basement for years. Fool (Brandon Adams), an African-American teen, breaks into the home of the wealthy landlords who evicted his family from a ghetto tenement. A fortune in gold coins is rumored to exist inside, but Fool discovers that the mansion is a chamber of horrors presided over by a pair of incestuous, serial killer siblings (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie). The twisted couple has also tried to raise a succession of kidnapped boys. Each botched effort is handled the same way -- the victim's eyes, ears and tongues are removed, and he's sent to live in the sealed-off basement, where a colony of similarly deformed "brothers" resides. Fool is able to avoid the evil lovers as he moves through the house's maze of hidden passageways. He discovers that the occupants have a daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer), who has survived their abuse, so he rescues her and they attempt to free the "people under the stairs."

Miracle Mile starts conventionally enough, with bashful musician Anthony Edwards going ga-ga over waitress Mare Winningham. After a pleasant if somewhat quirky day together, Edwards and Winningham plan a tete-a-tete at the all-night restaurant where the girl works. While preparing to call her on a pay phone, Edwards intercepts a frantic call from a soldier stationed at a Midwestern missile silo. The message: nuclear warheads have been launched, and it's only 70 minutes to Armageddon! This unsettling news casts severe doubts over the future of Edwards' and Winningham's relationship.

One day Wayne and Garth go to a rock concert, and Wayne falls in love with a bass guitarist named Cassandra Wong. Wayne spends the rest of the movie trying to get Casandra to fall in love with him. He also struggles with a network executive who wants to buy the rights to his show.

This is a remastered version of macabre rock star Alice Cooper's 1975 performance of his Welcome to My Nightmare rock & roll show before a live audience in London. Without the pioneering Cooper, there would be no Marilyn Manson or any of a number of modern derivative acts. His elaborate theatrics, encompassing lots of makeup, smoke machines, skeletons, giant spiders, a cyclops, and the disembodied voice of horror movie star Vincent Price, established benchmarks for years of subsequent hard rock band tours. By 1989, Cooper's appeal had dwindled to the point where his concerts were often small affairs that mainly attracted disaffected boys scarcely in their teens too drunk to comprehend the tongue-in-cheek aspects of Cooper's performance. By that time, some of the speakers on-stage were just hollow props. In this performance, however, Alice Cooper rocks on at the height of his fame.
