Book Wyrm Enters the World of Castlevania

I just want to start this off by saying that I have never played Castlevania in my life and know next to nothing about it besides that it was a video game. So when people started coming up to me at work and texting me that I needed to watch the anime I was kind of confused. They said I should check it out because there's vampires, it's a horror anime, and it's based on a video game and those are literally three of my favorite things so I gave it a shot and was not disappointed!

The first thing I loved about the series was that the first season is only four episodes long! I mean after having watched it, that sucks because I wish there was more to watch, but at first that was really appealing to me. I also love the premise for the show (and I'm not sure if it's the same as the game's premise) which is that Dracula's human wife was killed for witchcraft and in response he released an army of hell upon the world to get revenge. But now a ragtag group consisting of a vampire hunter, a scholar, and a vampire human hybrid are out to kill him. The four episodes managed to encapsulate a lot within them and the animation was gorgeous. It was done by Powerhouse Animation which isn't a super well known animation studio; Castlevania is their most notable work by far. I was super impressed with the visuals throughout each episode, you could really tell a lot of work was put into them. This turned out to be an extremely well done for a western animation project.

This might be the new goriest anime I've ever watched. There is absolutely no censorship for language or gore and that is so cool to me. I've mentioned this before, but I really hate censorship in things like video games and anime, and seeing people be cut in half and having their guts strung up around the town was very refreshing. The army from hell was really brutal and the first scene where they enter and blood rains down on everyone really impressed me. I personally felt sympathy for Dracula because his beloved wife was burned at the stake simply because she liked learning about medicine and I can understand why he would be upset about losing her. So I didn't feel too appalled when he sent his revenge army to kill everyone. I also really like the protagonist, Trevor, too! He's your classic I act like I don't care but really inside I do care kind of tough vigilante guy. His character design was super cool and he was fun to watch.

I really wish I could give you a better perspective on this as someone who has played the game, but honestly it was a little before my time as a gamer and I never got the chance to play it. However, after watching this anime I really, really want to play it! But I probably won't because I don't want my expectations to be too high and have them ruined after actually playing this very old game. But as someone who knew nothing about this series previously, this is a very good stand alone show and I think people should watch it! It was entertaining, gory, and filled with drama. When the vampire human son was revealed I couldn't believe it! (I mean I could because it's such an obvious thing to do, but the twist was still appreciated) I really can't wait to see where this is going to go and who knows, maybe I'll play the game. (But probably not)

After the wholesome pair profess their love through an opening song, their car breaks down in the woods, and they seek refuge in a towering castle nearby. Greeting them at the door is a ghoulish butler named Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien), who introduces them to a bacchanalian collection of partygoers dressed in outfits from some sort of interplanetary thrift shop. The host of this gathering is a transvestite clad in lingerie, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a mad scientist who claims to be from another planet.

Through renowned father of the midnight movies Alejandro Jodorowsky's intensely personal lens, ENDLESS POETRY tells the story of his years spent as an aspiring poet in Chile in the 1940's. Against the wishes of his authoritarian father, the 20 year-old Alejandro Jodorowsky (Adan Jodorowsky, Alejandro's son), leaves home to pursue his dream of becoming a poet, and is introduced into the bohemian and artistic inner circle of Santiago where he meets Enrique Lihn (Leandro Taub), Stella Diaz Varín (Pamela Flores), Nicanor Parra (Felipe Rios), all unknown at the time, but who would later become driving forces of twentieth century Hispanic literature. Living with these inspirational artists, Jodorowsky's exploration of his inner feelings takes him on a journey of sensual experimentation leading him to realize his innermost desires and passions. Continuing the autobiographical story he began in THE DANCE OF REALITY, ENDLESS POETRY is an ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth, as a universal force capable of changing one's life forever, written by a man who has dedicated his existence to creating spiritual and artistic awareness, told through Jodorowsky's unique surreal and psychedelic visual language.

He wants them to come back with him, and if he doesn't get enough volunteers, he threatens to chain them up and drag them along, "like they did ... in Africa." Like a scene from an Afro-Bergman film, Sun Ra plays cards with the evil Overseer (Ray Johnson) and wins the right to play a concert for his people all over the world! After the impressive show is over, he escapes back into space, with the Overseer and his agents hot on his heels. He saves his people and they watch the Earth explode from a distance.

The Overlook Theatre Reviews: Dead Silence, Hugh Gallagher's

5 of 5 viewers "Liked" "Dead Silence" (1989, USA)
Here's what the creatures had to say:

Lord Battle - "Imagine Bo from The Dukes of Hazzard has died. Luke has since taken up grave robbing and, between reading porn and pissing on skulls, harasses a paranormal investigator, ultimately stealing her EVP recordings. Funny thing is he gets possessed by the playback. Hilarity ensues as he tries to run down people in his AMC Pacer and is trailed by a desk jockey in his Suzuki Samurai. I highly recommend that micro budget fans head to SRS Cinema and buy this film, because the only thing better than watching Dead Silence, is watching Dead Silence with Hugh Gallagher's commentary track." - 3.5 Stars

Huntress - "Dead Silence was a combination of the elements I love and hate about micro budget horror movies; it had an awesome story, interesting characters, and cool kills, but my god could some of those scenes overstay their welcome. The good easily outweighed the bad though and all the weirdness made this bizarre movie a lot of very unpredictable fun." - 3 Stars

Dabbles - "This was well done, given the year it was made and the story. It was surprisingly well done. Wow that dolly shot. Production value and a home cam video. Good times." - 4 Stars

Math Mage - "Revived by a tape recorder as the titular dead silence, a satanic serial killer posses an incompetent grave robber to get into a series of car chases with a mulleted woman, set to a soundtrack provided by the writer/director/producers band. Terrible effects, bad writing, and worst acting (read your lines in advance!). A must see!" - 3 Stars

The Great Hornito - "Dead Silence was not a typical micro budget horror movie. It really focused on the build up and character development even though it wasn't that good. The story was pretty interesting but the delivery was not that effective. But for a micro budget film it was entertaining. Not a bad movie at all." - 3 Stars

The Overlook Theatre Final Rating*
(Below is for after you've seen the film)

Imagine an old farm house. This old farmhouse has been abandoned and since become dilapidated. Nature has started to reclaim the land as grass grows knee high and footpaths become lost. The barn itself has long faded in the sun and now the paint gives way to bare wood. Locals have started telling stories of strange music emerging from the house late at night, mostly on weekends, and have now begun calling the American ruins Hell House. This is perfect as a band named Hell has been using the now legendary (if only locally) space to practice.
One day while band front man, Hugh, was watching TV and stumbled upon a program that explained that placing a recorder on the grave of someone who died a violent or unusual death would yield paranormal results. So Hell set off to do just this. They found the grave of a local girl who had killed herself or something and left a recorder on the soil above her corpse. Returning a couple hours later, they collect the recorder and quickly head the Hell House to play the tape. After hooking the recorder up through their PA system and listening to a lot of nothing, they began to hear someone moaning... After an initial startle, the idea for Dead Silence was born!

The story above was embellished by Lord Battle and inspired by the commentary on the SRS DVD release of Dead Silence. I highly recommend listening to it to find out about a library full of Christians sitting through a 2 hour Hell set, the director's wife playing my 2 favorite roles, how the original score was created, and why/ how the brutal stunts were performed without stuntmen. Also, Hugh Gallagher is brutal while critiquing his own film, and it couldn't be more interesting. Listening to a director trying to fathom why people would not only watch his film, but buy it, then listen to a commentary track is amazing. I also feel like I should note that we all thought he was going for pacing during or first screening, and to hear him then shred his "padding" was amazing. For more from Hugh Gallagher check out his magazine Draculina (you can find this rabbit hole here)!

The Overlook Theatre materialized in a residence for a screening on 7/20/2017
*Based on the star ratings turned in by character reviewers, others viewed and got to "Dislike" or "Like" but that does not affect the rating.

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Warlock Collection, Ghost in the Shell and Re-Animator

July 25th 2017

The last Bluray Tuesday of July arrives. This week has a nice mix of classic and new films hitting shelves, as well as a few coming to bluray for the first time. Arrow Video releases a cool digibook remastered version of Re-Animator that is definitely worth a double dip. Much better release than the bare-bones version released a few years back that you can probably still find in Best Buy's 5.99 bin. Vestron Video continues growing its collectors edition line with the addition of its 11th title, The Warlock Collection, which includes all 4 Warlock films. I think I've only seen part one when I was younger. Or it was the second one? Not sure, but all that will change this week. For the first time on Bluray is The Stendhal Syndrome from Blue Underground. This is another interesting one I plan to check out in the near future. Also for the first time on Bluray is The Zodiac Killer (1971). This recently played at our Alamo Drafthouse as a Weird Wednesday and a few Overlook creatures checked it out. On to the new releases out today, the first being the live action remake Ghost in the Shell. Ghost in the Shell will have exclusive steelbook editions only at Best Buy. They are available in both standard bluray steelbooks and 4K Ultra HD steelbooks. So what will you be adding to your collections this week? Let us know in the comments. Until next week!

Terror Tuesday

Tuesday 25th @ 9:45pm (1hr 32min)
Horror (IMDB)
This is a combination message movie and horror film, punctuated with gruesome animal attacks. The story starts with dangerous PCBs contaminating a German city's water supply. While the toxins might have a negative impact on the health of the human population, it's impact on the animals in the zoo is immediate: it drives the animals in the zoo off their feed and a further accident gets them into the streets. The chief zoo keeper, a female reporter and a police inspector team up to try to get the fearsome beasts under control and protect the city's population. Mangled bodies and some horrible deaths are strewn across the screen before the disaster has ended. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Weird Wednesday

Wednesday 26th @ 9:45pm
Comedy/ Sci-Fi (IMDB)
A couple of years back, Vernon Chatman (Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, South Park, Doggy Fizzle Televizzle) wrote a screenplay about a family who lives adjacent to the Ground Zero of a thermonuclear disaster. Instead of sending the finished script to Hollywood, he divided it up into four parts and sent those four parts to four different comapnies that produce custom fetish porn videos. FINAL FLESH is the result of this inadvertant collaboration. There's a whole lotta nudity, a Taschen's book worth of regrettable tattoos, ponderous metaphyical musings, inventive toilet stuff, and absolutely no sex.

Super Shangri-La Show

Wednesday 26th @ 7:30pm (1hr 29min)
Horror (IMDB)
In this spooky thriller, an evil sorcerer invites an innocent young man and his girl friend to his dark and scary mansion. The two have no idea that the black magician is planning to sacrifice the young man to atone for the evil misdeeds of his ancestors who 200 years ago burned the wizard's relative, a witch, at the stake. A crazy party precedes the gruesome ritual. Fortunately for the young couple the sage Professor March (80-year-old Boris Karloff in one of his final films) is also a skilled magic maker and is there to save them. The film is also titled Curse of the Crimson Altar and The Crimson Altar. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996)
Thursday 27th @ 7:15pm (1hr 21min)
Animation/ Comedy/ Adventure (IMDB)
Satire is often misunderstood or even maligned by serious critics and Mike Judge’s debut feature is most definitely one of those films. Following Beavis and Butt-head across the raunchy back roads of un-entitled America, these two mumbling malcontents might truly have a profound purpose on this unstoppably spiraling planet. And like all great art, that purpose is up to you to uncover. MiDNiTES FOR MANiACS is proud to present the Bay Area’s first 35mm screening in more than 20 years. Come on out to the cranked up 1990s jams and low brow humor that you know you are in desperate need of.

Natural Born Killers (1994)
Thursday 27th @ 9pm (1hr 58min)
Drama/ Thriller (Google)
This prophetic and psychotic clusterfuck has more psychedelic energy in its first 10 minutes then most action packed franchises! Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson give career defining performances as modern day anti-heroes Mickey and Mallory Knox. Sporting one of the sexiest, white-trash couples this side of Kathryn Bigelow’s NEAR DARK (1987) and David Lynch’s WILD AT HEART (1991), Stone’s hyper-kinetic experimental style utilizes pretty much every kind of camera and camera technique known to cinema. While igniting extreme controversy upon its release in 1994, it’s time to celebrate this ultra violent flick on its 23rd Anniversary as one of the most jaw dropping and important time-capsules of the decade.

Both Screening in 35mm
