Double F'n Feature Friday is Goin' 80's

Yes it's samurai vs ninjas in tonights trip to the 80's. Both of these films have returned from the dead as the era of films that are so bad they are good thrives. "Miami Connection" is the real zombie here, not having seen circulation for years as for "Samurai Cop" he just got a recent HD upgrade.

Tonight maybe be the last double feature for awhile as the Overlook is relocating, so make sure to stop by. These films should start 7:30ish but movies will be rolling all day.

Spiral

5 out of 5 viewers "Liked" "Spiral" (2007, USA)
Here's what the citizens of the Overlook Theatre had to say:

Lord Battle - "Adam Green once again captures some of Hitchcock's haunting story telling ability. It's to bad the non jazz music is so jarring." - 4 Stars

Huntress - "The casting was so perfect I'm shocked Joel David Moore hasn't been cast as a reclusive social invalid ever since." - 4 Stars

Drumachine - "The first film I've seen that used Jazz in a not annoying way." - 4 Stars

The Great Hornito - "Good portrayal of a tard that sketches pretty girls." - 3 Stars

Johnny Ocelot - "A claustrophobic and chilling hitchcockian viewpoint with tasteful themes sprinkled about. Highly entertaining thriller." - 3 1/2 Stars

SummerSlam 2013

4 out of 5 viewers "Liked" SummerSlam 2013 (Los Angles, Staple Center)
Here's what the citizens of the Overlook Theatre had to say:

The Great Hornito - "WWE is really delivering great wrestling again. Three great matches, Cena's legdrop from the top rope, and that little midget losing his belt via pedagree by HHH makes Hornito a happy very fan." - 4 1/2 Stars

Lord Battle - "Two slashers face off as Kane and Bray Wyatt meet in a "Ring of Fire" match and are a complete let down. Thank the gods Lesnar beat the crap outta CM punk and Cena delivered the king of leg drops." - 3 1/2 Stars

Ice Giant - "The results were heart-breaking but the matches (main events) were two of the best matches of the year." - 4 1/2 Stars

Huntress - "Daniel Bryan looked like a scruffy little kid next to John Cena. Brock Lesnar would have squished him." - 3 1/2 Stars

Drumachine - Walked out. - Default 2 Stars

Here's what the citizens of the Overlook Theatre had to say.

Huntress - "An unpredictable, yet logically played out joyride that doesn't let you tuck & roll". - 5 Stars

The Great Hornito - "Brutally entertaining but a little too brutal for me". - 2 1/2 Stars

Drumachine - "Twin Peaks without restraint". - 5 Starts

Lord Battle - "Combine a true story, gore, David Lynch, and horrible cover art. What do you get? An awesome film no one will ever see. Change the cover art! Or atleast advertise Lucky Mckee as a producer, that alone would have got me!" - 5 Stars

Ice Giant - No Comment. - 4 Stars

My Little Eye

7 of 7 viewers "liked" "My Little Eye" (2002, UK)
Here's what the citizens of the Overlook Theatre had to say.

The Berkeley Blazer - "Spectacular atmosphere of dread, compelling dialog, and great pacing marred only by a disappointing conclusion." - 3 Stars

Ice Giant - "Excellent use of found footage style camera work. Disappointing "reveal" and ending."
 - 3 stars

Lord Battle - "My little eye is a unique addition to the found footage sub-genre of horror. This film utilizes mounted cameras to passively capture the action instead of a shaky handheld. This is the Big Brother of found footage films." - 4 Stars

The Great Hornito - "This movie makes me wanna "Fuck the pain away"." - 4 Stars

Drumachine - "It felt like everything after the reveal was kind of weak". - 4 Stars

Huntress - "Great use of montage to "cut the fat". My only qualm would be with the object of everyone's desire." - 4 Stars

"You're Next"

The citizens took a field trip to see "You're Next" (2013, USA) 6 of 6 people liked it.

Ice Giant - "The humor really worked without taking away from the movie. Best slasher I have seen in years." - 5 Stars

The Berkeley Blazer - "I knew nothing going in and had a great time. The heroine was transfixing and the make or break aspect of films like this was the characters, which were handled well. A smattering of silly plot turns only strengthen the ever-so-slightly dash of camp that underscored the film." - 4 Stars

Lord Battle - "I loved this film but I would have made one of the killers turn out to be a strange deformed man no one knows, then have him vanish and start killing everyone indiscriminately (Spoiler this doesn't happen). Still, they shoulda learned from "Dredd" and kept the masks on." - 4 1/2 Stars

Huntress - "It was exciting to see a modern slasher that didn't shy away from gory deaths and asshole characters." - 4 Stars

The Great Hornito - "This movie made me wanna go home and blend up a smoothie." - 3 1/2 Stars

Whats Coming Up for the Overlook Theatre

Friday August 23 is the next Double F'n Feature Friday and this time it's all about LARP's.

To make sure no one is still confused about what I said, only 1 of these films is a dark drama. I hope the movie posters I used above help short this misunderstanding out, because you will be very disappointed if you expect something dark out of "Unicorn City".

September 7th is looking like the day ArnoldFest will happen (Saturday). This will be a drinking approved event, so get ready and make sure you have work cleared up.

Also the Overlook Theatre review system is up and if you haven't checked out the characters that populate the theatre take a look here. I am also taking some of the citizens on a field trip tomorrow to see "You're Next", so expect a review of the film soon.

Race Wars: The Remake

6 Citizens viewed "Race War: The Remake" 5 liked it
here's what they had to say:

Drumachine - "Race Wars makes me want to do drugs." - 3 stars

The Great Hornito - "Whites win!!!" - 3 stars

Lord Battle - "Just like "Escape from New York" if John Carpenter was on PCP." - 3 1/2 stars

Johnny Ocelot - "Offensive, juvenile, not very cleaver. Reminds me a bit of Troma camp insanity but ultimately falls flat, and feels cheap." - 1 1/2 stars

Huntress - No comment - 3 stars

The Dungeon MasterI've been struggling to explain exactly what I admired about this movie; its something I see in a lot of film but have thus far failed to accurately describe. I get excited anytime a movie includes material that is clever or original, but could have been left out or done in a more orthodox fashion. It takes work to make a movie, so for someone to put the time into shooting something that might fall totally flat is pretty cool in an era where film success can be reduced to a paint-by-numbers operation.

Race War is full of what I'm trying to describe, some might write it off as bad filmmaking, but I think of it as adventurous, some of it is seriously golden. - 3 stars

Double F'n Feature Friday

Tonight the Overlook Theatre will be screening...

"Rolling Vengeance" (1987, Canada)

"It's like an R-rated episode of "The Dukes of Hazzard" where Rosco gets a little too free with Daisy, and Bo repeatedly runs him over with a tractor, but there is still a freeze-frame of everyone laughing at the end." -Paul Corupe (Canuxsploitation.com)

"Blood Tracks" (1985, Sweden)
(This is a Mats Helge film with members of Europe and Swedish glam band Shotgun Messiah!)

"They're on a mountain filming a video without realizing that they've brought so much fucking metal thunder with them that they've cause and avalanche!" - Ian Jane (Rockshockpop.com)

If you love a good B movie you wont want to miss these two classics,
so to be safe I'd show up around 4-5 PM.

Hatchet Triple Feature

"Hatchet 3" was released on DVD and BluRay this Tuesday, so with the final chapter of Victor Crowley's story out you know that means a marathon. I had a hard time putting this one off but I thought I'd throw it out there on the blog and give people a chance to see the Hatchet series in its entirety. Also it's always more fun viewing films with others, so expect these to play before next Wednesday. I'll send a personal warning to any reviewers.

The Overlook Theatre August Line Up

For all of the locals that commonly frequent the Overlook, here are some films showing this month. Mind you there are no dates for any of these films, short notice planning will win in the end so contact me if you find yourself not wanting to miss a particular screening.

First up is a Double Feature about gamers...

Part 1 of the Double feature is "Unicorn City" a dramady about gamers (not Halo gamers, D&D gamers), unlike the 99% of films involving people playing D&D "Unicorn City" is worth a once over. I know that's not saying much but I'm willing to rewatch it and that says alot.

Part 2 of the Double Feature will be "The Wild Hunt" a very dark drama about kids LARPing as a way to escape reality. I have also seen this film before and loved it, Highly recommend this one.

"A disturbed and delusional high school student with aspirations of a career in medicine goes to extremes to earn to earn the approval of her controlling mother.".
I havent seen this one yet but I just love visual naritives and ive heard alot of people whine about how this film is to "artsy", when people cry about it being "artsy" I can't help but get excited.

And just because things started feeling to serious I thought bring William Shatner out would brighten up the mood. "Head of the Family" is a Full Moon favorite of many and yet another I have not seen but this film should be at least entertaining.

And you guys voted for him so the Arnold Double feature should take place towards the end of August. Vote on the new poll to pick your favorite Arnold films!

"See No Evil 2" Gets an Interesting Pair of Directors

Jacob Goodnight will rise again this Fall as production will begin on "See No Evil 2". If you are unfamiliar with the first, don't worry most people are. I mean not everyone was as excited as I was to see Kane star in a slasher and I understand that. Still, the first was a very typical slasher that I would love to comment more on but I haven't seen it since its release in 2006, so I'll screen it and get some reviews going.

So, who are these ladies? These two are the directors signed on to film "See No Evil 2". Jen and Sylvia Soska are the "Twisted Twins", whose films you have not seen if you found yourself asking who they are. I say this because most people seek out their films based on hype that usually involves mention of hot twin directors covering sets in blood (pictured above). I personally do not rate films on the gender of the director(s) and found it a challenge fighting to sit through their first film, "Dead Hooker in a Trunk". I will say I really enjoyed their second film "American Mary". It  had a modern mad scientist theme that you don't see much, but the movie falling apart in the last act didn't help. Don't take my word for it though, many horror fans would argue with everything I've said, which is why the one thing everyone can agree on is that they are very polarizing. This is awesome for WWE Productions and Lions gate since the one thing they can count on by hiring the twins will be people talking about the film. I mean I'm excited to love or hate the movie because now that the Soska twins are on board I know I'll at least have something to say about it, unlike "See No Evil" (2006) which was the run of the mill slasher that you forget about over night, even coming from someone who loves slashers.

WWE isn't stopping with the horror here either, they just finished shooting the remake (reboot?) of the Leprechaun titled "Leprechaun: Origins". Sorry Warwick Davis (Willow, Star Wars) will not be returning, in his place is WWE's own Hornswoggle. They also are having Nathan Brooks & Bobby Lee Darby (Writers of "See No Evil 2") write a found footage film about people exploring the Bermuda. All of the talked about films here will be release with Lions Gate, so hopefully they will all be rate "R".

Here are a few words Tweeted from Hornswoggle on the set of "Leprechaun: Origins".

Karen Black (1939 - 2013)

Karen Black passed away today at the age of 74, she lost her battle with cancer. I just found out as I have been driving all day but this is incredibly sad news. If you find you're not very familiar with her work here is a very well done montage.

R.I.P. Karen and thank you for your addition to Horror and film history.

Thor vs Sharknado

It seems I'm falling in love with action figures again, damn "Pacific Rim" and 8bit Jason! I guess you could say they created the perfect storm (added this sentence just for that pun) of nostalgia.
P.S. I photo shopped this a little.

The Aftermath of "Sharknado"

It's really not surprising that the Weather channel has found a way to cash in on "Sharknado", I'd say it's more surprising that others haven't. When something goes as viral as "Sharknado" did it's a given that corporate america will respond. I mean have you ever wondered why the whole #tag fad started? It's a way for companies to follow current trends in an incredibly accurate way for free.

It's hard not to come across "Sharknado" meme's when surfing the web.

Some are defiantly better than others.

So when people respond this well to a movie what happens next...

Yes, be ready for a super quick sequel and I mean QUICK. The idea will be to make it fast so they don't miss the trend and to make it even more nonsensical in hopes of creating buzz. This really isn't anything new to the Sci-Fi/Horror genre so I'm not to worried about it but what I am worried about is SyFy channel's new love with the absurd...

A couple laughs at SyFy's obsession with sharks(Yes its and obsession, here's my pre-"sharknado" post that talks a little bit about it) and look what happens. Although this poster is not real I do believe SyFy is making a film called "Dracano" about a volcano that spits out dragons and another called "Sharktopus vs Pteracuda", read more on those here. So next time you find a movie funny because it's "random" and #tag the hell out of it, be prepared to face what comes through the door you are opening.

Since its a little to late to stop the "Sharknado" now, I guess we should embrace it and screen these bad boys in the Overlook Theatre... I'll keep you updated on that.

More 8-Bit Horror

Just when I finally put Jason up on his self for good, NECA went ahead and announced he's getting a friend (or enemy?).

It seems NECA is in a pleasing people faze, as what the fans want, the fans get. First they were smart enough to get the licensing to "Pacific Rim" (which I'm sure put people in the buying action figures mood) and then they release the viral 8-Bit Jason. Infact I was just writing up a post about how unbalanced the awesomeness of the 8-Bit Jason made my Freddy vs Jason shelf. Obviously upping the odds on Jason's favor, so what does NECA do? They even the odds.

Yes, Freddy looks awesome too, his colors may not be as out there but that's fine. Also, whats even cooler about Freddy is that he's not being released next year in San Diego. In fact you'll be able to order him off line or pick him up from your local comic book shop (If they submit they're order by Aug 12). NECA has many more photos of Fred here.

This is my shelf space I referred to earlier.

Just Arrived in the Mail

8-Bit Jason arrived today and I just can't seem to break away long enough to make a proper post. I have to say this is one of the coolest action figures I own and I'm having a lot of fun taking pictures of him in menacing poses, I'll spare you and not post anymore of those.
The rest of tonight will be spent screening films to review for the launch of the Overlook Theatres Reviews page. Ill get into that more in depth in the next couple of days.

Frys Electronic Visit / Ultra Violet Give Away

A while back I took a trip to Frys Electronics and came back with several awesome deals (blogged this earlier) which lead to $2 Thorsday, which was awesome FYI. Today I returned looking for more of the same but sadly no new deals were to be found, Although I did pick up another copy of "Jack Ketchum's The Lost" because the film is so cool I need to give it out and spread it around. Since I didn't want to leave empty handed I thought I'd check out the DVD section...

Other than the collection of puppet master movies each DVD was $1! "Jaws" and "Dio, Finding the Sacred Heart" were around $15 each and are Blu Ray's. I wont deny that the quality of movies has fallen pretty far for being only a $1 cheaper but that isn't stopping me from planing another Thorsday movie screening...

I didn't just write this post to brag about the awesome growing selection here at the Overlook Theatre (although that would be an okay reason) I also wanted to share the wealth, so pick either "Jaws" or "Shaun of the Dead" and leave a comment stating your pick and email. Also Ultra Violet copies of a movie allow you to own it virtually, this means with the code you will be able to watch it on your smart phone, Ipad, computer, PS3, and Xbox.

"V/H/S 2" Gets A BluRay, DVD, and VHS Release!!

How cool is it that something like this happens right when I add a VCR to the Overlook Theatre? It's so cool I'm just going to call it fate. I also totally stole the banner above from Bloody-Disgusting, I have no shame there. If you find yourself as excited as I am you can pre-order both films now over at Amazon, here are the links for "V/H/S" and "V/H/S 2" VHS tapes.

This is Awesome, expect a midnight double feature in the future.
In case you wanted some more form one of the creators of  "V/H/S", here's Simon Barrett doing a cameo voice in a rather violent short. See if you can pick out who he plays.

2 Dollar Thorsday

So last week I stopped by Frys Electronics and found several horror movies for $2, tonight we are screening the 3 no one has seen . Thoughts to come but a shout out to Frys, thanks for the awesome prices!
