Profondo Rosso?

I was having a hard time trying to figure out what to post today when I remembered I had bought a Goblin record years ago at Amoeba. I had no clue what the contents of the record were as I had never played it (and the cover didn't say), I had simply bought and framed it like a good collector. So I took it out of the frame and opened the cover for the first time in years...

My first reaction was, this is awesome! Followed by, wait, what is this?I was pretty confused and I actually had to look up "Profondo Rosso" and to my surprise it turned out to be "Deep Red". This had to be my most brain dead moment ever, as I own the film.

If you have not seen the film or have but just didn't pay attention, yes I was at least right about it being a Goblin record.

In fact now that I know exactly what it is, I think I'm going to bring it to the Warfield when I see them. I just love getting stuff signed and who knows when or if I'll ever have a chance again.
Oh and the damn frame I used was damaging the record case, so I swapped it out with another record that had a thinner case.

This is the record I replaced it with and no this is not the glam band, its the Canadian death band Slaughter (very cool, check 'em out).

And since I'm talking about framed horror records, here is the only other one I own. I will add that I love this to death, in fact this is one of my favorite things I own.

Dredd Sequel and "Judge Minty"

One of the many things that was talked about at the past San Diego Comic Con was the possible sequel to "Dredd", Karl Urban himself brought it up saying,"Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for "Dredd 3D" just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week.". I myself have been very vocal about how much I love "Dredd", I constantly harrass people about seeing the film. I mean this is the film that moved me so much I had to write about it, which in turn got this blog started. So it's safe to say I fully support the petition that was started to make it known people want more. If you find that checking the above link out is a bit to much for you just go like them on Facebook. (Thank you Bloody-Disgusting for the quote).

While we wait to see if the sequel will happen or not we can at least satisfy our Dredd craving with a pretty good looking fan film. "Judge Minty" is a non profit film set in the Judge Dredd world. I think this is pretty awesome as you normally only see fan films like this about Star wars or superheros. The film is up and free on their home site or you can simply view it below. Spread the word about the film if you like it, I mean they worked pretty hard for free so fans could some more gritty Mega-City One action. Enjoy!

If you happen to visit the Overlook Theatre regularly I suggest waiting to view it here. As I will for sure be screening this film in the future.

7 Days to Die *Kickstarter*

I normally wouldn't post about a world building game that is VERY much like minecraft but add zombies to it and your in. The picture above really does not depict the type of game this is so check out the video they posted below.

I myself have never played Minecraft so I may give this game a try. Also I find it hard to resist the RPG/Zombie combo. Even if I end up passing on the kickstarter for this game I will admit I enjoy watching the videos, oh and the pit traps are awesome!

Ultra Violet Give Away

A few days ago I posted about my fun time I had at Target purchasing these films, well it turns out that they both came equipped with Ultra Violet copies. This means I get to share a little bit of the fun with the Overlook readers. If you have yet to see either "Evil Dead" or "Spring Breakers" or find yourself interested in one of them just leave a comment below with your E-mail address and the film you would like, I'll randomly pick a winner tomorrow morning.

Double Feature Poll Up

Vote on the Double Feature theme you'd most like to see. The Other option on the poll is for ideas you have that I missed, which could really be anything. If you end up voting other just put the two movies and the theme in the comments section for this post, I'll add it to the list once I see it. The double features I used as examples were just films I own so please don't feel pressured to vote for something just because its listed. This poll also has no limits how many you pick, so I suggest picking your top 3.

Last Night on Earth

Now I don't want to get into the habit of reviewing anything remotely horror but the board game Last Night on Earth is just to cool. In fact this isn't just a remotely horror board game its supposed to play like you are a character in a movie. Just from the cover you can see all the stereotypes they nailed, like the high school jock, hot nurse, and country cutie, yeah they are a bit campy but it really works well. The game is for 2-6 players but I'm not gonna tell you to host a party or anything, I mean the main reason I decided to make this post is because it comes with awesome minis.

Here are the 3 different poses the zombies come in. I personally think that these are some of the coolest zombie miniatures period. And believe me here at the Overlook Theatre we have a little bit of experience with pewters...

And of course these are just the ones out of the carrying cases.

Here you can see the stereotypes much better.

These pewters (they are plastic but I'm used to referring to them as pewters either way, so bare with me) are so cool we even use them for a game one of our friends is running.

Either way checkout Last Night on Earth or just come play it here.

Why Frame A Laser Disc?

A while back in my first "I'm Back" post I mentioned buying laser discs for the art. So I pulled the unframed ones out of my closet and took pictures of the ones on my wall to show how a laser disc can make pretty cool art.Above is a shot of 2/3 of my front room wall. Normally I can't stand my picture frames being crooked but the sub woofer is on the other side of the wall so I've gotten used to it...

Id say the best and most obvious reason to frame a laser disc would be the art. Pumpkinhead has never looked better than he does on this lost format. Sadly these two are living in my closet at the moment, once I find the wall space these bad boys are going up for sure.

Another reason to dig through piles of laser discs in hopes of finding one to frame is the chance you may find some cool alternate art. Antoine Doinel is seen above stealing milk which is a much cooler subject for a cover than any of the ones they used for dvd/blu ray (as seen below).

More awesome art not on the DVD cover. "The Legend of Hell House" actually has terrible DVD...

I told you.

And once every now and then you find a film that is a pain in the ass to find in any format. I found this copy of  "Don't Look Now" at the Amoeba in Berkeley for $2.99, that is just something you don't pass up. On a side note I also found this book at Half Priced Books just a few blocks away!

I love books that focus on a single movie (I have another about "They Live").

Then the ultimate reason to hunt laser discs down. The simple fact some movies just never make it to the dvd/blu ray format! Well "The Return of the Evil Dead" has since been released but some things will never, like the untouched versions of the first 3 Star Wars movies.

I've seen this for sale 3 times, each time for $40. I still kick myself for not purchasing them.

So now that you are dying to hunt down and find your favorite films in laser disc format you'll enjoy this next bit of info. Framing them is incredibly easy as they are the same size as records! Hit up any Aaron Brothers or Michaels and they should have these sitting around for you...
There you have it, now go out and start decorating the house!

How Could I Forget...

Yesterday I posted all the stuff I picked up during my two day hiatus but some how these totally slipped my mind.

I can't understand how I could forget these two films. I have been counting the days till I could own these on blu ray, I mean its not often Harmony Korine gets a release like this. On top of that I even wrote a Yelp review about the target that tried to tell me the "Evil Dead" Steelbook didn't exist (my review). I sure showed them...

I'm Back and I Brought Lots of Stuff: Part II

Last time I found a bunch of great deals at Amoeba and I ended up missing 2 days of posting, the upside was I returned with lots of goodies. Well it seems the moon was full again and I missed another 2 days of posting... And yes returned with goodies!

BluRays!

The two Adam Green films on the bottom were $4 total at Frys. I have to say I love that Universal released a ton of SteelBook edition blurays. Nothing makes a consumer like me more happy, plus the comic covers worked for the two I picked up, which is a lot more than I can say for some of the others.

Even releasing this implies somebody liked it and I just cant believe that.

More BluRays!

Each bluray show here was also $2 each! I have yet to see even one of the "Prophecy" films and I don't know much about the other 3 either.

The only DVD this time out

"His Name was Jason" is one of those films I've wanted to see forever and have been reading about forever but just never got around to buying. Obviously I could have tracked it down online but the mixed responses kept it low on my "must see list". I finally came across it yesterday  for the amazing price of $1 it now sits in The Overlook Theatre.

Recently a VCR was added to the Overlook Theatre (Pictured above) and seeing as we only have two VHS tapes, (see the former "I'm Back and I Brought..." post) I bought a couple more.

Living in the Bay Area you are either a Raiders fan or a 49ners fan, Amoebas sticker reveals their colors.
Granted it was from the Amoeba on Haight Street.

I love when football documentaries over dramatize the sport and make it feel like you are history channel covering a war. That's the beauty of football anyway, it's a human sized chess game where people go to war. I can not wait to view this even though it may mean I watch it alone!

Making Robert Englund look just like Freddy for a movie will always increase sales.

I remember the first time I bought this on DVD, I was very very excited to see Robert Englund take on this role. All I remember about it though is being bored and disappointed, still for a $1 it's worth a second chance.
On a side note I've started getting regular attendees to fill out short review sheets after watching films in the Theatre. This means that I will finally change up the format of this blog and start review things like crazy, so stick with me it wont be long now!

X-Files Season 10

Issue #1 of X-files Season 10

Season 10 isn't something I can screen but its still very exciting. If the idea of continuing the series  via  comics brings back bad memories (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9) fear not. Joe Harris seems more than a perfect fit for the tough job of writing Season 10. But don't take my word for it, here is an interview he had last month with Bloody Disgusting. After reading that you should be convinced, I know I was. Still I may not even read my copy. Taking it out to enjoy its content is just something you don't do as a comic collector, trust me, I learned the hard way. So please check it out and tell me about it, otherwise ill just have to sit on the floor of Barnes and Noble when they get the graphic novel.

Variant art for issue #1

Here is a brief interview Gillian Anderson did a couple weeks ago with the Huffington Post. She mentions her favorite episode and displays a lot of interest in exploring more as Dana Scully. Oh and Issue #2 is out and seems to have brought back some characters from the dead...

The Adventures of Edward and Lorraine Warren

Since I'm going to see "The Conjuring" tonight I thought it be fun to point out some of the real adventures Ed and Lorraine Warren went on. First I'd like to state that Edward Warren Miney (1926-2006) severed in WWII (on a ship that sank) and also as a police officer, he later went on to be a Paranormal Investigator, Demonologist, author, and lecturer. His wife Lorraine Warren states she is a clairvoyant and light trance medium. If you would like to know more on exactly what a "Light trance medium" is check here. This paranormal team has been involved in a lot over the years and are quite renown, he's a few movies and stories they inspired.

The Amityville Horror house

Although they had nothing really to do with this story they did fight claims that it was a hoax which increased the medias attention.

People magazine had this to say about a trial that the Warrens were involved in. The incident is called the Connecticut Demon Murder.

This is a book written by the Warrens about a werewolf demon they exorcised

"The Haunted" is based on the Smurl family that the Warrens said were living with 3 spirits and a demon.

This is the Smurl Family house

Another film inspired by a Warren story

"The Conjuring" is about the Warrens visit to the Perron family farm house.

Here is a 45min video of Andrea Perron (The real person) revisiting her farm.

This is a "Paper Conjuring".

Here's a cool prank set up to advertise "The Conjuring"
