We are on the cusp of festival and convention season everyone! But before we can get there, we have an eclectic week filled with new, nostalgic, and vintage films. Although I'm not exactly sure where Drag Me to Hell falls on the spectrum, I'm excited to watch in on a big Terror Tuesday screen tomorrow!
Steven Soderbergh's new film Unsane hits theatres at the end of this week, and hopefully one of the early Thursday shows is close enough for those interested to attend. This film looks... well, absolutely insane! After seeing the trailer once in theatres I averted my eyes every time following, because I want to remember as little of it as possible. I'm very excited to go into this film as blind and unassuming as possible and getting lost in it.
The Balboa adds another addition of AniMondays to the books with Cowboy Bebop: The Movie at 7:30 tonight, and hosts a live band this Wednesday. Any Terry Malts fans reading this should check it out!
Last but certainly not least, this weekend is our first film festival, the Unnamed Footage Festival. Hopefully you are familiar with the name, as it has been our lives for a couple of months now. And I hope some of you can make it out!

Evil Dead director Sam Raimi takes the helm for this "spook-a-blast" shocker about an ambitious L.A. loan officer who incurs the wrath of a malevolent gypsy by refusing to grant her an extension on her home loan. Determined to impress her boss and get a much-needed promotion at work, Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) lays down the law when mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) literally comes begging for mercy at her feet. In retaliation for being publicly shamed, Mrs. Ganush places the dreaded curse of the Lamia on her unfortunate target, transforming Christine's life into a waking nightmare. Her skeptical boyfriend, Clay (Justin Long), casually brushing off her disturbing encounters as mere coincidence, Christine attempts to escape eternal damnation by seeking out the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao ). But Christine's time is fast running out, and unless she's able to break the curse, she'll be tormented by a demon for three days before literally being dragged to hell. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Once more, a wise-guy teenager tries to prove he's smarter than any adult-and nearly destroys the whole world in the process-in WarGames. Computer-game aficionado Matthew Broderick inadverently taps into a hush-hush Pentagon computer, then proceeds to inaugurate his favorite game, "Global Thermonuclear War". What we know, but Broderick doesn't, is that the Pentagon, hoping to eliminate the chancy "human element" in the event of an actual war, has given its computer total, irreversable control over the launching of nuclear weaponry. Broderick and government official Dabney Coleman race against time to reverse the computer's resolve to send bombers to Russia. WarGames scored a hit, especially with teenage filmgoers.

For what would prove to be his final film, Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami gave himself a challenge: to create a dialogue between hiswork as a filmmaker and his work as a photographer, bridging the twoart forms to which he had dedicated his life. Setting out toreconstruct the moments immediately before and after a photograph istaken, Kiarostami selected twenty-four still images, most of them starklandscapes inhabited only by foraging birds and other wildlife, and digitally animated them into subtly evolving four-and-a-half-minutevignettes, creating a series of poignant studies in movement, perception, and time. A sustained meditation on the process of imagemaking, 24 Frames is a graceful and elegiac farewell from one of thegiants of world cinema.
