Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyone had a great, movie filled weekend, but I also hope you are all ready to hear about what's playing in the bay are a this week. Because there is a lot.
At the end of January, I mentioned that this was the month of festivals in the city, and this week we get to welcome the beginning of another festival, which will be taking place at the SFMOMA (Museum of Modern Art), in their Phyllis Wattis Theatre. Co-presented by SFMOMA and the San Francisco Film Society, Modern Cinema: Werner Herzog and Ecstatic Truth will feature the documentaries of Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, and Guy Maddin; directors who dabble in in the idea of truth and trying to define it. This series will run from February 9th to the 26th.
Also this week, the SF Indie Fest continues to take over the Roxie Theatre, with screenings running through the week. Some of the upcoming highlights can be found below.

A haunting, artfully understated critique of American gun culture, Tim Sutton's third feature is loosely based around the 2012 massacre in Aurora, Colorado that took place during a multiplex screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." Employing a mesmerizing documentary-style technique and a cast of non-professional actors, DARK NIGHT follows the activities of six strangers over the course of one day, from sunrise to midnight, the shooter among them. Shot in Sarasota, Florida and lensed by veteran French DP Hélène Louvart (PINA, THE BEACHES OF AGNES), the dream-like visuals articulate both Sutton's carefully crafted landscapes and the characters' sense of alienation and suburban malaise. Winner of the Lanterna Magica Award at the Venice Film Festival following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, DARK NIGHT is essential viewing, not only for art-house filmgoers, but for anyone invested in the debate over gun violence in America as well.

The second novel by British author H. Rider Haggard (his follow up to King Solomon's Mines) became this adventure classic, filmed twice previously in silent form. Randolph Scott stars as Leo Vincey, the descendant of an explorer who, according to family lore, discovered an immortality-bestowing fire on an expedition to a remote area of Manchuria. Leo sets out on a new voyage of discovery to the region's frozen wastes with a British scientist, Horace Holly (Nigel Bruce). Along the way, their team is joined by a trader, Dugmore (Lumsden Hare) and his daughter Tanya (Helen Mack). A tragic avalanche then kills everyone except Leo, Horace, and Tanya. Rescued by tribal shaman Billali (Gustav von Seyffertitz), the trio is led underground to Kor, a secret land with a hot climate ruled over by the cruel Ayesha (Helen Gahagan), better known to the natives as "She Who Must Be Obeyed."
