I can't remember what I was looking for when I stumbled upon The Hole in the Ground, but I know that I was immediately intrigued. Not only did it possess several qualities I've grown to love in horror films - it's set in a remote Irish forest, the cast includes a creepy kid, the story is familiar but not a remake - it wasn't claiming to be the "scariest movie made in the past decade" or whatever outlandish taglines movies love to showcase. I appreciate that.
The stills from The Hole in the Ground are amazing. They don't exactly give anything away but definitely tease you with a tantalizing taste of this shrouded folk story. The deliberate framing and varied lighting tell a mini story in themselves. These may not be part of the story over all, but it's a bonus when a film is interesting to look at as well as pay attention to.
Previously, writer/director Lee Cronin worked on the Ghost Train segment of Minutes Past Midnight (which is available on Amazon Prime), but instead of haunted trains, he's back with a more changeling or Invasion of the Body Snatchers type story:
"Sarah moves her precocious son Chris to a secluded new home in a rural town, trying to ease his apprehensions as they hope for a fresh start after a difficult past. But after a startling encounter with a mysterious new neighbor, Sarah’s nerves are set on edge.
Chris disappears in the night into the forest behind their house, and Sarah discovers an ominous, gaping sinkhole while searching for him. Though he returns, some disturbing behavioral changes emerge, and Sarah begins to worry that the boy who came back is not her son."
Backed by the folks at A24, The Hole in the Ground seems to fit right in with the titles like The Witch and Hereditary.
