Treasures From The ComiCombs

I hope everyone had a great 2015 and are all ready to start this year off with some comic goodness! We’re back on a normal release schedule and there are some good ones this week. Below you’ll find a few of my picks from last week as well as the first part in an ongoing review of Spread Volume 1.

Project Nemesis #3 (American Gothic Press)

Jeremy Robinson, author of a series of novels named Nemesis Saga, returns to write the comic adaptation of the first book in the series, Project Nemesis. This one has been a pretty good change of pace from everything I normally read. It has all the makings of a big budget movie for syfy. There’s some deadpan humor, tons of blood, at least one nod to Star Wars and even a crazy rooftop jump into a helicopter. This is definitely a fun read.

Code Pru #1 (Avatar Press)

Writer – Garth Ennis

Artist – Raulo Caceres

Garth Ennis is somewhat of a legend. He has a massive amount of books under his belt and a high percentage of them are pretty good. I’m always game to read a new book from Ennis and this one turned out to be entertaining. Not too much has happened yet, this being issue #1 but this is definitely a good setup for future issues.

Seduction of the Innocent #1 (Dynamite Entertainment)

Writer – Ande Parks

Artist – Esteve Polls

Colorist – Salvatore Aiala Studios

Set in 1953 San Francisco, this book tells the tale of Thomas Jennings, a newly transferred FBI agent. The crime bosses of the city are being murdered and Jennings stumbles onto the case his first day. In the same vein as classic crime horror stories, this book is gritty. This one is well written from the get go. The artwork is solid and judging by the first issue, this book is going to have a good run.

Throughout this month I’m going to review Spread Volume One: No Hope and at the end of the month I’ll give it a score. I’ve heard a little talk about this one but never really bothered to look into it. Shuffling through the shelves at my local comic shop I came across this book and it only caught my eye because of the cover. It’s been given some nods by some pretty great writers so I figured I would check it out and let you all know if it’s worth picking up! This week I’ll be talking about issue 1.

Spread Volume One: No Hope

Issue #1 

The end of the world scenario is one that has been done countless times before but this is definitely a different take on what has been shoved down our throats lately. The Spread, a bunch of disgusting looking monsters with bloody tendrils and sharp teeth have taken over the planet and have made it something pretty gnarly. We’re introduced to the protagonist, No (his name really is No), as he’s inspecting the wreckage of a plane taken down by the Spread. The art in this book is pretty excellent. The Spread is very reminiscent of 80's/90's horror movie monsters. I have to give a nod to the pacing in this issue as a lot of books tend to throw way too much at you from the beginning. This one, however, does a good job of introducing you to the situation and the characters first. When we pick up in issue #1 the Spread has already taken over, we don’t know what the Spread is and that’s pretty scary judging by the look of it! No isn’t much of a talker, he tends to do the talking with his fists and his hatchet. At the end of the issue, after brutally taking care of a group of bandits, No finds Hope, a baby that the bandits had kidnapped. Hope is also the narrator of our story. The issue ends on a pretty high note and I’m excited to see where it goes from here. Next week I’ll be talking about issues #2 and #3 - don’t miss it!
