Treasures From The ComiCombs Issue #37: Ash for President, X-Files Origins, Afterlife With Archie

Welcome back! San Francisco Comic Con is only days away and I couldn’t be more excited. Our fifth and final Wednesday this month brings us a few solid releases to close out a rather slow month. This week we will be taking a break from the duel review but I will have two new books next week to kick off September.

Army of Darkness: Ash for President One Shot (Dynamite)

Ash Williams doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. With season two of Ash Vs Evil Dead coming in October, Dynamite gives us another wacky one shot to hold us over. Ash for President promises us more adventure that only Army of Darkness can but this time we see Ash running for president. This sounds interesting and I’m betting it’s going to be a fun read.

X-Files Origins #1 (IDW)

I’m pretty excited to check this one out. Origins gives us a look into the pasts of Mulder and Scully during their teenage years. It’s going to be a treat getting a look at what made these two the characters that we’ve come to know. Also worth noting here are the amazing Variant covers you see here from the talented Cat Staggs.

Afterlife With Archie #10 (Archie Horror)

Archie Horror books don’t seem to come along as often as we all wish they did so when we finally get one you can be sure it will be on this list. Roberto Aguirre Sacasa has been doing an amazing job with this title and this issue looks to take us back to before the world ended and give us a look into the lives of Josey and the Pussycats.

In 2015, Marvel began the biggest event yet that would change their comic book universe in a big way. Secret Wars, not to be confused with the 1984 event of the same name, is the culmination of Jonathan Hickman's amazing runs on the Avengers, The New Avengers and Fantastic Four.

Secret Wars (Marvel)

Although this series was met with several delays, Hickman did an excellent job wrapping things up. Now this may seem like just another event, but Marvel has never done anything like this in its long history. Hickman had been writing the Main book in the Marvel Universe since 2013 and he had laid out an amazing story full of death, heartbreak and heroism. This story has many layers to it and the outcome changed the landscape of the Marvel universe. Unfortuantely, after this event Hickman left Marvel to pursue creator-owned opportunities. Nothing that Marvel has been releasing since has compared to anything that Hickman did. I recommend starting from Hickman’s run on the Avengers but that is a lot to get through. Secret Wars is a great read and the end of an era.

Make sure to come back next week, I’ll have two books ready to battle it out in our duel review as well as more recommendations. If you happen to be heading out to San Francisco Comic Con this weekend, contact me on instagram, it would be great to meet up and I might have something for you! As always, make sure to pick up something cool from your local shop.
