Welcome back to the ComiCombs! Narrowing down your pull list every week is a tough thing to do. Luckily for all of you mine is constantly growing so I can give you some pretty cool books to check out. There are so many great books out there and they always don’t fit on this list so for the second half of this year I’m going to add one more recommendation to it. Something a little bit different to check out from my personal pull list. On top of an extra recommendation, I have chosen the book that will get a space on the shelves of the ComiCombs. Will it be Nailbiter of Revival? Read on to find out!
Kong of Skull Island #1 (BOOM!)
Kong is back in this all new prequel. Two warring tribes must put their differences aside and work together as they try to survive Skull Island. Merian C. Cooper’s family is giving this one their seal of approval so let’s see what the duo of James Asmus and Carlos Magno have in store for our favorite gigantic ape.
The Dark & Bloody #6 of 6 (Vertigo)
The end is finally upon us. The previous issue left us at a critical moment in the story and the sixth and final issue promises something big. This book has consistently been on my pull list every month. Let’s hope this finale doesn’t disappoint. This is a pretty creepy book and the setting adds a lot to that creepiness. If you haven’t been following this book, keep it on your radar, it will be getting a TPB in the near future.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #6 (Archie Horror)
If you’re new to the series, this is a good jumping on point as we start a new arc with issue #6. If you are new, pick this one up and in two weeks look for the volume one TPB. This is a book you will want to binge read. In the past, this book has been plagued with delays so here’s to hoping that they keep on track. Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Robert Hack are an amazing team. Don’t miss out!
----------------------------------------------------------------
This is the first of many recommendations I’ll be giving you straight from my personal collection. While they’re mostly going to be different from what I usually give you, rest assured they’re good reads.
Old Man Logan (Marvel)
In 2014, Marvel ran the “Death of” storyline in Wolverine. As the title suggests, Wolverine died. The story left something to be desired and the absence of Wolverine left a big hole in the X-Men and the Marvel Universe as a whole. During the 2015 Secret Wars event, Marvel brought back a familiar face from a 2008 storyline in Old Man Logan. This new series from the team of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino is one of the best in Marvels current lineup. Lemire is one of the best writers in the business and Sorrentino's art and panel layout is spectacular. This is a book where the writing and the art work perfectly hand in hand. This one should not be missed!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week I picked two random books to review against each other. Nailbiter volume one by Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson, and Revival volume one by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. These are two books I knew next to nothing about before reading and I ended up liking them both. Unfortunately one of these books just wasn’t as good as the other. So which book was better?
Nailbiter Volume One: There Will Be Blood (Image)
I don’t have anything negative to say about Nailbiter. As far as first volumes go, this one did everything right. The pacing is perfect. Joshua Williamson does a great job of introducing us to the cast and not getting lost in back story or meaningless confrontations. The writing is tight and it makes for a very engaging read. Revival, while having an interesting story to tell, comes up short; it falls victim to an inconsistent pace mostly due to too many characters. Where Nailbiter introduces a few key characters and follows them, Revival takes a different route and gives us quite a few more characters to follow. It makes sense however as the aftermath of the revival incident affects the whole town but it just isn’t executed as well as it could have been.
Revival has six collected volumes and the story was intriguing enough for me to give it another shot. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough and Nailbiter will be getting a spot on the shelves of the ComiCombs. I can’t wait to get caught up with the series. Nailbiter tells a very intriguing story that any horror fan would enjoy. I really hope you guys give this one a shot.

That’s everything for this week! I hope you enjoyed getting a little glimpse into what my personal pull list looks like. Come back next week for some more recommendations. Two more books will be going head to head and I’ll give you another peek into my dark little corner in the ComiCombs. As always, make sure to pick up something awesome from your local shop!
