This week October really picks up in the Halloween events side of things and I'm getting excited just thinking about it! First thing's first: the first collaboration between Peaches Christ Productions and David Flower Productions, Into the Dark SF, launches their immersive haunt experience in just TWO DAYS.
You must be 21 or older to gr into the Terror Vault and it will be up to you how involved in the story you want to get. Be sure to check out the rules too, you don't want to cross any lines you shouldn't have and get ejected from the fun. If that's too intense or just not what you're looking for, you could also enter the Dead Zone and race to survive the zombie apocalypse!
This weekend is also Sinister Creature Con at the Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento! They've got a great guest list and lots of events in store for all those who venture into their depths, so check out their site to plan your day out.
And our friend Kai, who puts on crazy events at the Balboa all the time, is putting on a crazy event at the Balboa this weekend! It's The Sorceress Sabbath Witchcraft Film Festival and it's going to be amazing! Not only does he have an awesome lineup of witchy films, he has also arranged for some special guest speakers and more!

While collecting junk one day, best friends Sonny and Sam meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine. Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life -- just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save mom and foil Slappy's wicked plan.

What could have been a mere blaxploitation picture is elevated above the norm by two factors. The first is the performance of Duane Jones, cast as a professor of African studies who moonlights (literally as a vampire). The second is the mood-drenched, jazzy musical score, which very likely cost more than the film itself. But back to the plot: Jones continues to carry a torch for his ex-wife Marlene Clark-who, before the film is over, goes "bats" herself. Featured in the cast is writer/director Bill Gunn as the villain (no, the vampire isn't always the heavy) and the always welcome Mabel King.
