Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): I Believe In Halloween, The Pit and The Pendulum, The Curse of the Werewolf

This week October really picks up in the Halloween events side of things and I'm getting excited just thinking about it! First thing's first: the first collaboration between Peaches Christ Productions and David Flower Productions, Into the Dark SF, launches their immersive haunt experience in just TWO DAYS.

You must be 21 or older to gr into the Terror Vault and it will be up to you how involved in the story you want to get. Be sure to check out the rules too, you don't want to cross any lines you shouldn't have and get ejected from the fun. If that's too intense or just not what you're looking for, you could also enter the Dead Zone and race to survive the zombie apocalypse!

This weekend is also Sinister Creature Con at the Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento! They've got a great guest list and lots of events in store for all those who venture into their depths, so check out their site to plan your day out.

And our friend Kai, who puts on crazy events at the Balboa all the time, is putting on a crazy event at the Balboa this weekend! It's The Sorceress Sabbath Witchcraft Film Festival and it's going to be amazing! Not only does he have an awesome lineup of witchy films, he has also arranged for some special guest speakers and more!

Now, let's see what our theatres have in store for us!

Goosbumps 2: Haunted Halloween opens this Friday, with early showtimes Thursday evening. Yes, Jack Black is back. Terror Tuesday at the Alamo Drafthouse will be Ganja and Hess, the Balboa Theatre will be screening I Believe in Halloween starting Friday and the Castro presents some of their awesome double features!

Opening This Week

Early Screenings Thursday 11th (1hr 40min)
Opens Friday 12th
Comedy/ Horror (IMDB)

While collecting junk one day, best friends Sonny and Sam meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine. Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life -- just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save mom and foil Slappy's wicked plan.

Terror Tuesday

Tuesday 9th @ 10:05pm (1hr 50min)
Drama/ fantasy/ Horror (IMDB)
What could have been a mere blaxploitation picture is elevated above the norm by two factors. The first is the performance of Duane Jones, cast as a professor of African studies who moonlights (literally as a vampire). The second is the mood-drenched, jazzy musical score, which very likely cost more than the film itself. But back to the plot: Jones continues to carry a torch for his ex-wife Marlene Clark-who, before the film is over, goes "bats" herself. Featured in the cast is writer/director Bill Gunn as the villain (no, the vampire isn't always the heavy) and the always welcome Mabel King.

Weird Wednesday

Wednesday 10th @ 10:20pm (1hr 37min)
Horror/ Romance (IMDB)
Only loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe's classic short story, this horror film was filmed on location in a spooky Italian castle and tells the convoluted story of a mad priest who devises exquisitely painful ways of getting his victims to confess to dabbling in witchcraft.

November Fire Recordings presents

I Believe in Halloween (2018)
Screening All Weekend (1hr)
Documentary (IMDB)
"It was a dark and stormy night." That's how it begins, right? A good Halloween story has those elements, the basics. "I Believe in Halloween" is just that, from interviews with kids telling us what Halloween means to them and fun music videos, to vintage footage and photos, antique postcards, advertisements, decorations, and costumes. This celebration of Halloween is complete with a toe-tapping soundtrack of nine classic Halloween songs that Bryan Kehoe and HobGoblin recreated. Your jack o' lanterns will be grinning. No tricks, all treats! Come enjoy a nostalgic, dark and stormy trip through what makes Halloween the greatest holiday ever!

Double Feature

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
Tuesday 10th @ 7pm (2hrs 17min)
Horror/ Mystery/ Suspense (Rotten Tomatoes)
A young couple move into an apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

Unsane (2018)
Tuesday 10th @ 9:30pm (1hr 37min)
Horror/ Thriller (IMDB)
A young woman is involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she is confronted by her greatest fear--but is it real or a product of her delusion?

Double Feature

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Thursday 11th @ 7pm (1hr 37min)
Fantasy/ Horror (Google)
David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne), two American college students, are backpacking through Britain when a large wolf attacks them. David survives with a bite, but Jack is brutally killed. As David heals in the hospital, he's plagued by violent nightmares of his mutilated friend, who warns David that he is becoming a werewolf. When David discovers the horrible truth, he contemplates committing suicide before the next full moon causes him to transform from man to murderous beast.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961)
Thursday 11th @ 8:50pm (1hr 31min)
Horror (IMDB)
Oliver Reed (in his first lead role) is compelling as a young man whose tragic birthright curses him to become a bloodthirsty beast in the light of the full moon. This lush and effective slowburn Gothic story confirmed Britain's Hammer Films as the house of horror in the 60's, and remains one of the finest werewolf movies ever made.

Thursday 11th @ 8:30pm
"We sent Patton Oswalt a tweet back in July asking him to stop by the Roxie when he’s in town to show our audience WHATEVER HE WANTED and he said YES!! We can’t wait to have Patton back at his old stomping ground to present one of his film faves!"

This event sold out in minutes, but there will be a RUSH line on the night of
