It's going to be a very interesting week in the bay area's theatres! We're starting things off with a Terror Tuesday that will be hosted by Midnites for Maniacs's Jesse Hawthorne Ficks and will have a Skype Q&A with the writer/director of The Woman, Lucky McKee! From there you have your choice of RoboCop 2 and an evening of old San Francisco featuring The Barbary Coast. The Roxie theatre presents an evening of classical French cinema, and the New Parkway ends the week with a screening of Tremors.

Through a series of harrowing encounters Cleek and his family quickly discover there is more to this woman than anyone would suspect and that sometimes the devil wears a handsome face.

A new drug has surfaced in the crime-laden city of Detroit, causing crime to reach preposterous proportions so the laboratory inventors of Robocop (1) go back to their drawing boards and come up with a super version, Robocop 2--more powerful than its predecessor and therefore more capable of handling the problems afoot. Unfortunately something goes wrong with the new Robocop and it goes nuts. The original Robocop (Peter Weller) has to battle not only the evils of the street, it must defeat its new demented "brother."

It's the wild and woolly waterfront world of San Francisco in the late 1800s in this rambling tale of an outrageous nightclub owner (Edward G. Robinson) and his efforts at wooing lovely Mary Rutledge (Miriam Hopkins), a lovely Eastern lass left to her own devices in the rowdy port city. The innocent babe loses that innocence when she becomes a kept lady, running the roulette wheel in Robinson's nightclub. The plot matures when Mary falls in love with an honest and upright gold miner. When the lovers are discovered during a fateful tryst, they flee the evil Robinson, hoping to escape as stowaways aboard a departing ship. Robinson is magnificent in this ruffian role. This action-filled adventure is suitable for the whole family.
The night will also feature a presentation on the famous hoax of Sir Francis Drake's Plate of Brass by local historian Dr. Robert J. Chandler

Anselm and Maria both deny Anselm's past, but Lena is determined to get him to confess, even as her own weapon is turned on her and she is forced into a moral dilemma.

Tremors is actually two movies in one. On its own terms, it's an enjoyable modern sci-fi horror-thriller, with good pacing and a sense of humor; but it's also a loving tribute to such 1950s low-budget desert-based sci-fi-horror films like Them!, It Came From Outer Space, Tarantula, and The Monolith Monsters. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are the stars, a pair of small-town handymen living in a small desert community, who stumble upon several difficult-to-explain phenomena, including a couple of people who've died under extremely strange (and, in one instance, very grisly) circumstances.

Andrée Clément embodies a desolate psychological space as a young girl masterminding a gang of provincial thugs. What makes the story stranger still is her idolizing of a gangster in hiding (Pierre Fresnay) who only wants to elude the authorities, and who’s being blackmailed into being a model citizen by the town consul (Fernand Ledoux) who knows his true identity. This is one of the most bizarre triangles in all of film noir—don’t miss it!

Here Andrée Clément is joined by some serious star power—Simone Signoret, Paul Meurisse, and the legendary Françoise Rosay—in an ironic tale of the sordid events that swirl around the Hotel Bijou, a seedy dive run with an iron fist by Rosay. It’s the usual plat du jour—murder, deceit, revenge, greed, squalor, prostitution, unrequited love—served up with panache and wit by a stellar cast. Andrée Clément is the long-suffering “good girl” who tugs at your heart—and who will absolutely astonish you in Macadam’s slam-bang finish!
