Digging Up the Dirt with KillDozer and DJ Stallion, Cosplayer of Jason from Friday the 13th VII

Over the years, cosplay has grown from a few dedicated fans with home made costumes to entire clubs and even cosplay stars who have meet and greets and autograph signings. Wading through all the over hyped models dressed like Wonder Woman or showing off store bought nonsense to gain Instagram followers, you come across those who do it with pure love, not only putting together screen accurate works of art but even staying in character. One such cosplayer is DJ Stallion whose love for Friday the 13th inspired him to go above and beyond, not just play Jason but the most brutal and fierce looking Jason from the entire franchise, Jason from Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood. After seeing this magic in action at Silver Scream Fest, I had to reach out and dig up some dirt on how this cosplay came to be.

KillDozer: As a horror nerd I want to ask why Jason from Friday the 13th VII "the new blood"? That is such a specific part of the franchise and one with a telekinetic final girl no less.

DJ Stallion: I have always been a fan of the Friday the 13th films ever since the first one came out. But when Part 7 came out in 1988 and I saw Jason, I was like DAMN that's Bad-Ass.

KillDOzer: What did it take to put your incredible costume together? How long did it take and what details were crucial for you to get as accurate as possible?

DJ: I have always dressed up as Jason, even as a little kid back in 1986-87-88. I would get whatever hockey mask was at the Halloween store at the time. I would also fix them up to match the movie as much as possible. I started really getting my costume together in 2011. It look a lot of research, money to find the right FX Artist with the most accurate Jason parts. I am still doing final touches to my costume to this day, I want to be movie accurate.

KillDozer: Are you a fan of Friday the 13th VII or more a fan of the Jason from that installment?

DJ: I am a fan of the Friday The 13th franchise. I choose to play the roll of Part 7, because to me, it has the best look and overall detail.

KillDozer: Have you ever been to an event where you regretted going in cosplay?

DJ: Not at all.

KillDozer:  Do you cosplay as any other characters?

DJ: I have only cosplay as Jason at cons, but I do have a really accurate Michael Myers costume too.

KillDozer: When did you start appearing places as Jason?

DJ: When Friday The 13th Part 2 came out in 1981, I started dressing up as Jason for Halloween. When the hockey mask came about in Part 3, that was when I got my first hockey mask. I also worked in a haunted house as Jason back in 1987-88-89-90 & so on.

KillDozer:  What reactions do you receive from people who are not into horror or aren't part of the horror community?

DJ: When I go to Cons, I walk around without costume at first to scope out the scenes. Then I go change into Jason & once I'm Jason, I stay in character. I can't even walk into the doors of a convention without getting about 10-20 photo ops. When I walk in, I see a lot of eyes getting very big. Then they ask for a picture and I just stand there and look. They ask expecting me to answer with my voice, lol. I always have a friend who is the translator. He's the one who answers for me, because I don't want to break character. I also had a lot of people tell me I'm way too accurate and others seem to be too scared to get near me.

KillDozer: Do cosplayers get along or is there friendly competition between horror cosplayers and, let's say, anime cos players?

DJ: I've never seen a problem at Cons with Cosplayers having any sort of problem with each other. When I go, there is a small chance that I run into another Jason, but if I do it's usually a little kid wearing a hockey mask from Target or something, lol. But I do see like 50 different Spiderman's or Batman's. I'm sure they have some sort of inside beef or competition.

KillDozer: What is your favorite part about playing Jason?

DJ: I like staying in character & seeing the reactions of people when I walk by or up to them. I even had a few grown adults cry in fear and I had to walk away so they would not have a panic attack. This is also at a Con where there are 1000's of Cosplayers. I'm not sure why they are so scared of Jason... LOL

KillDozer: Where can we go to follow you and see where you are appearing next?

DJ: I am on Instagram and Twitter at CosplayJasonF13. I usually post where I will be next. By day I am actually a full-time DJ, I own my company & I DJ about 10-15 times per month. I only can really attend a Con on a Sunday.

KillDozer: Okay, here are some quick fun questions: if you could choose one "super hero" power to use against Jason in an attack (like the final girl from Friday the 13th part VII), what would it be?

DJ: I would use The Power of Cloning, then Jason would have to fight Jason.

KillDozer: Do you have a natural grudge against Freddy?

DJ: Yes, Freddy is a bitch who plays with little kids. lol

KillDozer: What is your favorite piece of movie memorabilia that you own?

DJ: I own about 20 hockey masks, 10 under masks, along with my full costume. I also have about 5 machetes, and one of them is signed By Linda Blair, which is a funny story. I was dressed up as Jason at Haunted House Fair Grounds Event. She was there singing autographs. She grabbed my ass, then signed my machete. lol

KillDozer: Does every actual Friday the 13th feel like a holiday that you must celebrate?

DJ: Not all the time, only if they drop a new Friday the 13th movie on that day. Or if there happens to be a Con to go to that day and weekend. Those are the best.

Don't forget to follow DJ on Instagram and Twitter, and say hi the next time you see The New Blood Jason walking through a convention. He probably won't bite...

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Annihilation, The Road Movie and Zombie 3 & 4

May 29th 2018

The last Bluray Tuesday of May has arrived and it brings us a light week on new releases. Annihilation tops my pickup list this week. Shocking Dark is also released from Severin and if you buy these three as a bundle at their website, you get exclusive slip covers for a limited time. The Shocking Dark slip is extremely unofficial and may cease to exist as soon as they ship this batch, so they will be super rare. Next up today is Found Footage film The Road Movie and if you missed our review check it out here. Only on the Epic Pictures Group site, and similar to Terrifier is The Lodgers, a supernatural horror, period romance film with a discounted price. Rounding out this week is Bloodsuckers from Outer Space from Vinegar Syndrome and Haunted the complete series from Kino Lorber. Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): Upgrade, The Haunting, SF Doc Fest

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day, whether you're spending it with family, at work, or watching Memorial Day themed horror movies! This is an interesting week in the bay area, and an exciting one, as Leigh Whannell's second directed film Upgrade gets a wide release. We were lucky enough to see this film during en early preview screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco and, even with our incredibly varied tastes, everyone in attendance loved it! They hosts of the Overlook Hour talked about it in episode 89 (find it on Stitcher / iTunes). This is one I strongly recommend everyone checking out, and it's one I can't wait to watch again.

Aside from th new sci-fi horror (my favorite!) release, the Stanford Theatre also kills it with their Wednesday and Thursday double feature this week, especially if you're into 60's horror movies. I don't particularly seek them out, but both The Haunting and The Innocents sound great.

Terror Tuesday this week may sound familiar to you too... Friday the 13th VII, anyone? It's late in the franchise, sure, but a character from this sequel was just added to the Friday the 13th game. Also it's just a damn good movie.

Lastly, this Thursday the SF Documentary Festival begins its programming. And in this first week, the film that stood out most to me was the Bill Murray centered film, which will be screening at the Roxie Theatre. Check out the full program calendar here!

Opening This Week

Early Screenings Thursday 31st (1hr 35min)
Opens Friday 1st
Action/ Horror/ Sci-Fi (Rotten Tomatoes)

Terror Tuesday

Friday the 13th XII: The New Blood (1988)
Tuesday 29th @ 10:15pm (1hr 28min)
Horror (Rotten Tomatoes)
Directed by makeup effects artist John Carl Buechler, the seventh in the long-running, grisly horror series was far from the last, although the climactic fate of its antagonist would seem to suggest a final send-off. Lar Park Lincoln stars as Tina Shepard, a teenager with uncontrolled telekinetic powers. As a girl vacationing at Camp Crystal Lake, Tina killed her abusive father with the use of her mental abilities. Years later, seeking intensive counseling from manipulative, greedy psychologist Dr. Crews (Terry Kiser), Tina agrees to participate in a radical therapy that takes her back to Camp Crystal Lake. Unfortunately, Tina's psychic skills rouse the slumbering Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) from his watery grave and, in typically bloody fashion, the vengeful spook begins dispatching the randy teenagers partying in a house nearby. As Tina attempts to stop Jason's slaughter with the use of her powers, the mass-murdering ghoul encounters his toughest opponent yet. Friday the 13th, Part VII: The New Blood was often referred to by series fans as "Jason vs. Carrie," an apropos reference to Tina's strong similarity to the main character in the horror classic Carrie (1976). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Weird Wednesday

Angst (1983)
Wednesday 30th @ 10:15pm (1hr 27min)
Drama/ Horror/ Thriller (IMDB)
Partly based on a true story and partly fiction, this humanly degrading drama does not concern monsters of the imagination, but a murderer who is paroled after 10 years in prison and then kills again in a particularly inhuman way. He breaks into a house and murders its three occupants when they return: an elderly mother, her mentally handicapped son who is confined to a wheelchair, and her pretty daughter. The killer drinks the blood of one of the victims while reciting all the abuse he experienced as a child that made him commit this act against three strangers. As the story continues to unfold, psychiatrists are brought in to discuss the man's mental condition. The gruesome scenes were filmed with the best cinematography possible, implying the director wanted to emphasize the gore. It is difficult to find any valid reason in this film for dwelling on the killings and the murderer, other than simple exploitation for a better box office take. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Midnight Madness

Clue (1985)
Friday 1st @ 11:55pm (1hr 35min)
Comedy/ Crime/ Mystery (IMDB)
In this spoof of McCarthy-era paranoia and 1950s wholesomeness, the characters and plot are drawn from the popular Parker Brothers board game of the same name. On a dark and stormy night in 1954, six individuals with ties to Washington are assembled for a dinner party at the swanky mansion of one Mr. Boddy (Lee Ving). Boddy's butler, Wadsworth (Tim Curry), assigns each guest a colorful name: Mr. Green (Michael McKean), Col. Mustard (Martin Mull), Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), and Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn). Two additional servants, the Cook (Kellye Nakahara) and Yvette, the maid (Colleen Camp), assist Wadsworth as he informs the guests that they have been gathered to meet the man who has been blackmailing them: Mr. Boddy. When Boddy turns up dead, however, the guests must try to figure out who killed him so they can protect their own reputations and keep the body count from growing.

Shot on digital video, this no-holds-barred, semi-autobiographical film from Italian actress/model Asia Argento presents the bleak decent of a popular actress into a haze of drugs and overindulgence. Anna Battista (Argento) has seemingly everything anyone could ever want, yet sometimes everything is never enough. Fed up with going through the motions as an actor, Battista aspires to seek a career as a director so that she may truly explore her currently latent artistic talent. The queen of excess, Battista's attempts to realize her true talent are time and again shattered as the she is used and abused by everyone she comes into contact with. After a one-night fling with an emotionally distant and uncaring Australian rock star (Jean Sheperd) leaves the self-confessed whore a lovelorn mother-to-be, Battista's desperation to bring her story to the screen finds her dealing with a shady American producer (Joe Coleman), an agent reluctant to assist her in branching out, and a heroin-addicted former filmmaker who is as close to ending his life as Battista is to beginning hers. Her career in disarray and her uncertain future growing increasingly grim, Battista embarks on a numbing binge of sex and drugs that takes her from Europe to America and back again. Attempting to seek-out the father of her unborn child and find some sense of stability, Battista finds the truth about her one-time lover.

SF Doc Fest
Friday 1st @ 9:30pm (1hr 10min)
Documentary (IMDB)
One man’s journey to find meaning in Bill Murray’s many unexpected adventures with everyday people, rare and never-before-seen footage of the comedic icon participating in stories previously presumed to be an urban legend. Whether it be singing karaoke late at night with strangers or crashing a kickball game in the middle of the afternoon, Bill Murray lives in the moment and by doing so, creates magic with real people.

The Haunting (1963)
Wednesday 30th & Thursday 31st @ 7:30pm (1hr 52min)
Horror (IMDB)
Anthropology professor Richard Johnson investigates reports of psychic phenomena at a "troubled" New England mansion known as Hill House. He is joined by Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, women of radically different temperaments who share a common gift for ESP. Cynical Russ Tamblyn, who stands to inherit Hill House, goes along with the paranormal investigators, hoping to get a few laughs. He doesn't -- nor does Harris, the person most adversely affected by the various ghoulies, ghosties and things that go bump in the night which reside throughout Hill House. Both Julie Harris and Claire Bloom insist to this day that they experienced genuine ghostly disturbances during the filming of The Haunting. Conversely, director Robert Wise noted that he wanted to undergo a paranormal experience, but never did.

The Innocents (1961)
Wednesday 30th & Thursday 31st @ 5:40pm & 9:35pm (1hr 40min)
Horror (IMDB)
In this lugubrious but brilliantly realized adaptation of Henry James' classic novella The Turn of the Screw, 19th century British governess Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr) arrives at a bleak mansion to take care of Flora (Pamela Franklin) and Miles (Martin Stephens), the wealthy household's two children. Outwardly the children are little darlings, but the governess begins to feel that there's something unwholesome behind those beatific smiles. After several disturbing examples of the children's evil impulses, Miss Giddens gets information from the housekeeper (Megs Jenkins) that suggests that the children may be possessed by malign spirits -- or are all these events just the products of Miss Giddens's own imagination? The best and most frightening vignette in The Innocents occurs when the governess casually kisses young Miles, then recoils in horror when she realizes that someone other than Miles has kissed her back. Unlike many CinemaScope productions, The Innocents plays better in the claustrophobic confines of the TV screen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Screenings in the Bay (Friday to Sunday): The Sacrament, The Zodiac Killer, Scarlet Diva

I'm so ready for this weekend! Not only because it's a day longer, but also because we're starting it off by finally seeing Revenge, which opens at the Roxie Theatre tonight! Many of the Overlook's family have already seen this film and the rest of us have been hearing great things, so I'm pumped.

Also this weekend, the Yerba Buena has a bittersweet and awesome film series celebrating San Francisco's dark past. It's lovingly called "Please Help Me I Am Drowning" which is a line from one of the Zodiac Killer's letters to the media, and it's justified by their playing both films on the elusive murderer. They couldn't be any more different!

First Reformed also expands to the Alamo Drafthouse starting today. Another title I've been extremely curious about! This will be an eventful weekend after all.

Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. From writer-director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver; American Gigolo; Affliction) comes a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary.

Laid up with a broken leg, photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) is confined to his tiny, sweltering courtyard apartment. To pass the time between visits from his nurse (Thelma Ritter) and his fashion model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), the binocular-wielding Jeffries stares through the rear window of his apartment at the goings-on in the other apartments around his courtyard. As he watches his neighbors, he assigns them such roles and character names as "Miss Torso" (Georgine Darcy), a professional dancer with a healthy social life or "Miss Lonelyhearts" (Judith Evelyn), a middle-aged woman who entertains nonexistent gentlemen callers. Of particular interest is seemingly mild-mannered travelling salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who is saddled with a nagging, invalid wife. One afternoon, Thorwald pulls down his window shade, and his wife's incessant bray comes to a sudden halt. Out of boredom, Jeffries casually concocts a scenario in which Thorwald has murdered his wife and disposed of the body in gruesome fashion. Trouble is, Jeffries' musings just might happen to be the truth.

Friday 25th @ 7:30pm (1hr 48min)
Biography/ Drama (IMDB)
In this docudrama, Natasha Richardson plays Patty Hearst, the heiress to her family newspaper fortune who was kidnapped and allegedly brainwashed by members of the radical Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). She is blindfolded and stuffed into a closet for 57 days and subjected to the philosophies of her SLA captors. She is later offered her freedom but elects to join the group, and Hearst and the gang proceed to go on a rampage of well-publicized bank robberies. Since the story is told from the point of view of the victim -- from her book -- the feature attempts to portray her plight sympathetically. Was she the victim of ruthless political extremists or a spoiled rich girl playing out her counterculture fantasies? The truth probably lies somewhere in between. Twenty years after the kidnapping, her SLA counterparts were still in jail while Hearst, married with children, made the rounds of television talk shows. She is perceived as someone whose incredible financial resources kept her from prison, and her stories of being the terrorized victim are unconvincing at best.

This 1971 exploitation vehicle is primarily designed for maximum squirms, produced as it was at the height of the true-life killer's notoriety, but it's notable for the efforts made by the filmmakers to include authentic case details while theorizing about the identity of the still-unapprehended serial slayer. Opening with a major red herring in the guise of a trucker who claims to be the Zodiac before being killed by police in a domestic violence standoff, we're eventually introduced to the real psycho, a postal worker named Jerry (Hal Reed) who breeds rabbits in his apartment and murders in order to collect slaves to serve him in the afterlife.

Bluray Tuesday Featuring Of Unknown Origin, Red Sparrow & Game Night

May 22nd 2018

Bluray Tuesday creeps up on us once again. This week is a bit lighter on the horror releases, but still has some nice genre film titles. Let's start with Scream Factory, which releases the very overdue home invasion film, Of Unknown Origin for the first time on Bluray with new scan and bonus material. It's joined by 1960's Italian creepy castle film The Vampire and the Ballerina. Russian spy thriller Red Sparrow, hits shelves today. This film was pretty entertaining with twist and turns throughout. I can't wait to rewatch it in 4K. Best Buy will carry an exclusive Bluray steelbook packaging for it. Comedy murder mystery Game Night is next up today. This film sure surprised me! I really enjoyed it and while not all jokes landed, I laughed quite a bit in this one. There were lots of twists in this one too. I'll definitely add this to my collection this week. Scooby-Doo prequel film Daphne & Velma hits shelves today, with the girls solving their first mystery before meeting the rest of the gang.
