Things are definitely picking up in the bay area! This week we have two new titles (although one of them does not have showtimes listed in the area just yet, I'm confident that they will surface soon), and a slew of great older ones. A Quiet Place opens this week and I'm very curious about this one. I have a pretty good feeling that this will turn into an excellent monster movie, but there are still ways to make that obnoxious, so I'm trying not to give myself too high of expectations. Still excited though! The Endless also gets a limited release this week, but my fingers are crossed that it will be playing here next week. The Alamo Drafthouse is already showing its trailer, so it has got to be a matter of time.
This is the opening week for the San Francisco International Film Festival, which usually has a gem or two hidden in its programming. There's a limited number of Dark Wave films and it looks like the Roxie will be hosting all of them.
And this week The Warriors will be screening on two screens simultaneously, but for simplicity sake, I only included the one that was not sold out. And I got my tickets! Speaking of which, Terror Tuesday tickets are getting scarce, so you'd better act fast or Santa Carla will just pass you by.

Following their Lovecraftian modern cult classic SPRING, acclaimed filmmakers Moorhead and Benson return with this mind-bending thriller that follows two brothers who receive a cryptic video message inspiring them to revisit the UFO death cult they escaped a decade earlier. Hoping to find the closure that they couldn't as young men, they're forced to reconsider the cult's beliefs when confronted with unexplainable phenomena surrounding the camp. As the members prepare for the coming of a mysterious event, the brothers race to unravel the seemingly impossible truth before their lives become permanently entangled with the cult.

In this hit '80s hybrid of the horror movie and the teen flick, a single mom and her two sons become involved with a pack of vampires when they move into an offbeat Northern California town. Lucy (Dianne Wiest) and her sons, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim), move to Santa Carla to live with Lucy's lovable but curmudgeonly father (Barnard Hughes). Lucy gets a job from video-store owner Max (Edward Herrmann), then begins dating him, while Sam hangs out with Edward and Alan Frog (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander), a pair of vampire-obsessed comic-shop clerks. Soon Michael falls in with some actual vampires after becoming enamored of one of their victims: Star (Jami Gertz), a gypsy-like vixen who is trying to hold on to her humanity even though vampire leader David (Kiefer Sutherland) wants to play Peter Pan to her Wendy. When Michael visits the cavernous hangout of David and his cronies and unwittingly drinks from a wine bottle full of vampiric blood, he becomes an unwilling member of the bloodsucker biker gang.

'Taxi Zum Klo' is a true story, full of humour, tenderness, passion, longing, sex, erotica and pain. A story that is as colorful and varied, as common and exciting as the life and scene in which it portrays: the gay and leather community of 1970's Berlin. 'Taxi Zum Klo' is authentic and honest, a film that does not have to take anything into consideration. A truly independent cult feature film that garnered a dedicated audience upon its initital release, and is now fully remastered and ready for a second outing.

Walter Hill's hip, super-stylized action film unfurls in a dystopian near-future, when various gangs control New York City. Each gang sports a unique moniker ('The Warriors,' 'The Baseball Furies,' 'The Rogues'), with a costume underscoring its "theme"; each, in turn, is also responsible for one geographic area. Hill sets up the landscape as a massive, violent playground - replete with bridges, vacant subway tunnels, parks, abandoned buildings and the like, all ripe for exploration and adventure. As the tale opens, the titular Coney Island has traveled to the Bronx to attend a city-wide meeting of all gangs; at that event, however, the psychotic leader of a rival gang, The Rogues (David Patrick Kelly of Dreamscape) assassinates the head of the city's foremost gang, but The Warriors are pegged as culpable. This sends the gang fleeing through the labyrinthine city. With every thug in Manhattan in vicious, homicidal pursuit, they must also overcome all obstacles in their way. Throughout, Hill keeps the onscreen violence absurd, exaggerated and unrealistic, downplaying death to an extreme degree; despite this fact, the film sparked a massive amount of controversy and an ugly backlash for allegedly inciting violence and destruction in several theaters where it initially played. James Remar, Michael Beck and Deborah Van Valkenburgh lead the ensemble cast. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
