The Unnamed Footage Festival: Features Lineup for a Weekend of Found Footage

Since its conception, the Unnamed Footage Festival has evolved beyond the originally intended six strictly categorized film layout, into an international collection of new and old films. It's the first film festival of its kind and the subject is almost a taboo among horror fans, so the goal has shifted from exclusivity to celebration. This is a weekend dedicated to showcasing the accomplishments that found footage has made, the potential it possesses, and the range it can cover.

~ Saturday the 24th ~

California Premiere

Cold Ground (France, 2018)
Saturday 24th @ 11am (1hr 24min)
1976: Two young journalists leave for the French-Swiss border to investigate a strange case of cattle mutilations and record testimonies for a TV channel. Yet, once they get there, the scientific team they were supposed to meet has gone missing. Escorted by a first-aider, a British biologist, and an American forensic investigator, Melissa and David will go looking for the missing team deep into the mountains.

This icy unreleased feature comes to us from Fright House Pictures in Spain. The film has made its rounds to several film festivals and collected an impressive handful of awards along the way!

Live Q&A After the Film

The Next Big Thing (USA, 2016)
Saturday 24th @ 12:55pm (1hr 23min)
When Julian allows his deranged best friend Chuck to follow him around 24/7 with a camera, his whole world spirals out of control causing turmoil in his personal and professional life.
~💀~
The internet is a strange place that makes people do some very questionable things to stand out in. The Next Big Thing both deconstructs and satirizes this compulsion in this uncomfortably dark comedy. Director Brody Gusar will be joining us after the screening for a Q&A.

Butterfly Kisses (USA, 2018)
Saturday 24th @ 3pm (1hr 31min)
Found footage and urban legend come together in chilling fashion to spin this unsettling film, shot on location in Ellicott City, Maryland. A videographer sorting through used tapes uncovers hours of footage of a young woman obsessed with an apocryphal figure known as “Peeping Tom.” Determined to uncover the mystery behind her fascination, he in turn loses himself in the vanished woman’s tale.
~💀~
Filmed under the radar in both Baltimore and Ellicott City, Butterfly Kisses was the unexpected faux documentary horror gem of the Silver Scream Film Festival, where it snagged the Best Feature award. Now the story of "Peeping Tom" comes to San Francisco to screen at its fifth film festival.

World Premiere

Descent into Darkness: My European Nightmare (France, 2013)
Saturday 24th @ 4:55pm (1hr 24min)
Sorgoi Prakov, a television cameraman, is travelling through Europe with hand-held cameras to make a “tourist” travelogue for his TV station back home about the “European Dream”. But when his wallet is stolen and the film producers don't answer his calls, Sorgoi's situation gets increasingly dire.
~💀~
We are extremely excited to feature the theatrical world premiere of the new edit of Descent into Darkness: My European Nightmare! This is one travel journal that will make you squirm in your seat as you attempt to differentiate script from reality.

Unfriended (USA, 2015)
Saturday 24th @ 7pm (1hr 23min)
While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself a year earlier. At first they think it's a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends' darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead.

~💀~

This cyber bullying cautionary tale made groundbreaking strides in the world of POV cinema, yet did not receive the reception that it deserved from audiences. But in the context of this festival, we plan to highlight how impressive a film entirely shot on Skype really is.

Long Pigs (Canada, 2007)
Saturday 24th @ 9pm (1hr 21min)
A documentary by two desperate young filmmakers who stumble upon the ultimate subject, a 33 year old cannibalistic serial killer named Anthony McAllister, who has agreed to let them document every aspect of his horrifically violent life-style.
~💀~
An exposé on the life of a cannibal in the present day is not something that you'd expect to be funny but somehow Chris Power manages to combine the two in this gory Canadian film. Obscured over time, Long Pigs has made it to countless lists of hard to find, need to see found footage movies.

~ Sunday the 25th ~

North American Premier

Boots on the Ground (UK, 2018)
Sunday 25th @ 11am (1hr 27min)
Hindu Kush, Afghanistan October 2014. War ends at midnight, all five British soldiers have to do is stay alive till then. After surviving a firefight the five British soldiers try to find a safe haven to sit out the rest of last night of the Afghan war. Trekking through woodland they come across a large imposing British fort dating back to the first British-Afghan war of the early 19th century. As the night unfolds and their mission is finally explained to them, they find themselves engulfed in a labyrinthine nightmare of seemingly un-combatable forces from another realm.
~💀~
Boots on the Ground came to us in the last days of submissions and we couldn't be more excited to have this award winning UK feature make its North American premiere in San Francisco!

Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (Romania, 2015)
Sunday 25th @ 1pm (1hr 28min)
A young man in Romania goes to shocking extremes to convince Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway to star in his film.
~💀~
Not only was Adrian Tofei in character through the entire shoot of Be My Cat, he was already getting into the mindset of the character before the cameras were ever rolling. So he knows how to turn an audience against him. And no, he is not really obsessed with Anne Hathaway... as far as we know.

The Road Movie (Russia, 2017)
Sunday 25th @ 2:55pm (1hr 7min)
A documentary comprised entirely of footage from dashboard cameras from Russian cars.
~💀~
This experimental documentary breathes new life into the videos that get smashed into a compilation and forgotten. They are used to tell a unique narrative and almost entirely made up of privileged moments that you couldn't get any other way than with the ever present dash cam.

Live Q&A After the Film

The Triangle (USA, 1h34m)
Sunday 25th @ 4:35pm (1hr 34min)
After receiving an unsettling postcard from an estranged friend living in a secluded commune, four filmmakers take their cameras into the wilderness of Montana to document the mysterious inner workings of the group on their disconcerting road to self-sufficiency, witnessing something more shocking than they ever imagined.
~💀~

Shot with only a vague idea of what each character's motivation would be, The Triangle collected over 200 hours of unhindered footage. The setting, yurts in the middle of the desert, was real, and the filmmakers lived there for the duration of the shoot. All the pieces come together for this baffling and nerve wracking documentary. Several cast and crew members will join us after the screening for a Q&A!

#Screamers (USA, 2016)
Sunday 25th @ 6:50pm (1hr 25min)
When an internet company decides to investigate a series of 'Screamer' videos, they are confronted with havoc and hell they could never expect.
~💀~
#Screamers may remind you of another mysterious documented journey, and there's good reason for that. Co-writer and star, Tom Malloy, said that this was meant to be the horror fan's Catfish, and it pushes past where its inspiration stopped, ensuring that you'll be thinking about this film long after it's over. #Screamers is still making its festival rounds and picking up awards along the way.

WNUF: Halloween Special (USA, 2013)
Sunday 25th @ 8:45pm (1hr 23min)
The 'WNUF Halloween Special' is a stunning found footage film expose of terrifying supernatural activity that unfolded at the infamous Webber House, the site of ghastly murders. Local television personality Frank Stewart leads a group of paranormal investigators including Catholic exorcist, Father Joseph Matheson and the prolific husband-and-wife team Louis and Claire Berger. Together, the experts explore the darkest corners of the supposedly haunted Webber House, trying to prove the existence of the demonic entities within.
~💀~
WNUF recreates the 80's like nobody's business, from the plastered smiles on every news anchor, to the locally made commercials! After a weekend of emotional turmoil, end the festival with a spooky haunting on Halloween night!
