Screenings in the Bay (Friday to Sunday): The Road Movie, Videodrome, The Midnight Man

The weekend is just about here which means it's a great time to check out what movies are playing around the bay area over the next couple days. Tonight The Road Movie has its official opening night at the Roxie Theatre! It will be playing all weekend and into next week, so you guy should definitely try and make it out. We've been living with this movie all week and I believe it's the kind of documentary that grows on you more with each screening. You can check out our interview with director Dmitrii Kalashnikov on the Overlook Hour Podcast page, and get even more background on the film through our email interview here! Also this weekend, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children was extended until the 25th, the Castro Theatre presents an awesome double feature, and The Midnight Man hits VOD.

Double Feature

They Live (1988)
Friday 19th @ 7:30pm (1hr 37min)
Horror/ Scifi/ Thriller (IMDB)
A homeless drifter discovers a reason for the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor: a conspiracy by non-human aliens who have infiltrated American society in the guise of wealthy yuppies. With the help of special sunglasses that reveal the aliens' true faces and their subliminal messages ("marry and reproduce," "submit to authority"), our hero tries to stop the invasion. This satire of Reaganomics and the "greed is good" era also has one of the funniest (and longest) fight scenes in American cinema.

Sunday 21st @ 5:15pm & 8:50pm
Animation/ Drama/ Horror (IMDB)
There is light and beauty, even in the darkest of worlds. Winner of Spain's Goya Award for Best Animated Feature (where the director separately won Best Animated Short Film in the same year), Alberto Vázquez's debut feature is a darkly comic, mind-bending fantasy based on his own graphic novel and award-winning short film. Striking graphic imagery brings to life a discordant world populated by adorable (and adorably disturbed) animated critters, searching for hope and love amid the ruin. Stranded on an island in a post-apocalyptic world, teenager Dinky and her friends hatch a dangerous plan to escape in the hope of finding a better life. Meanwhile, her old friend Birdboy has shut himself off from the world, pursued by the police and haunted by demon tormentors. But unbeknownst to anyone, he contains a secret inside him that could change the world forever.

Friday 19th @ 7pm (2hrs 3min)
Saturday 20th @ 7:05pm & 9:35pm
Sunday 21st @ 8:30pm
Adventure/ Drama/ Fantasy
An other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.

Horror (IMDB)
It was supposed to be just an urban legend... On a snowy night in her grandmother's sprawling mansion, teenage Alex (Gabrielle Haugh) and her best friend Miles (Grayson Gabriel) discover a mysterious box hidden away in the attic. Inside are instructions for The Midnight Game, an ancient Pagan ritual said to summon the players' greatest fears. It all seems like harmless fun-until they unleash the terrifying spirit of The Midnight Man, an unholy force who pits them against their darkest demons and dares them to survive. Horror legends Robert Englund and Lin Shaye (A Nightmare on Elm Street) costar in this terrifying, supernatural game of cat and mouse. Play at your own risk...
