Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): Crocodile Fury, Battle of Memories, Roar

What a great week we have ahead of us! Seriously, almost every small theatre in the city has something cool going on and we have some tough decisions to make.

Dead Awake started its run at the 4 Star on Friday and will continue this week, but they will also be showing Battle of Memory starting at the end of the week. It sounds like a different take on Total Recall and worth a watch. The Alamo Drafthouse has a solid block of programming all week, including Brian De Palma's Carrie for Terror Tuesday and Crocodile Fury for Video Vortex on Thursday. This will be the second Video Vortex hosted by our very own Trash and there is currently one seat available. Also this week, the Super Shangri-La Show presents a super hero/ super villain double feature Wednesday and all the stills from these movies look crazy! Thursday the Cat Power! film fest presents the bloodiest non-horror (but still totally qualifies as horror) movie of the lineup, and The New Parkway shows one of my top 5 favorite films at the end of the week.

So much to choose from!!

A blonde actress is preparing for her biggest role yet, but when she finds herself falling for her co-star, she realizes that her life is beginning to mimic the fictional film that they're shooting. Adding to her confusion is the revelation that the film is a remake of a doomed Polish production, "47," which was never finished due to an unspeakable tragedy. And, that's only the beginning. Soon, a seemingly endless onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations flashes across the screen: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers, screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more.

Midnight Madness

Fire Walk With Me (1992)
Friday 19th @ 11:55pm (2hrs 15min)
Drama/ Horror/ Fantasy (IMDB)
This dark drama is the prequel to the TV series, Twin Peaks, also by director David Lynch. A woman who seems to be innocent and pure by day leads a double life in a rural community where quite a bit of evil lurks just beneath the surface of an otherwise typical American small town. As she was sexually abused throughout her childhood by her possessed father, Laura has some obvious sexual problems and is heavily addicted to cocaine. This film tells of the bizarre and twisted circumstances that led to her murder--which was where the television series began.

Also screening Saturday 20th

The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)
Monday 15th & Tuesday 16th @ 9:30pm (1hr 33min)
Horror/ Thriller (IMDB)
A deeply atmospheric and terrifying new horror film, The Blackcoat's Daughter centers on Kat (Kiernan Shipka) and Rose (Lucy Boynton), two girls who are left alone at their prep school Bramford over winter break when their parents mysteriously fail to pick them up. While the girls experience increasingly strange and creepy occurrences at the isolated school, we cross cut to another story-that of Joan (Emma Roberts), a troubled young woman on the road, who, for unknown reasons, is determined to get to Bramford as fast as she can. As Joan gets closer to the school, Kat becomes plagued by progressively intense and horrifying visions, with Rose doing her best to help her new friend as she slips further and further into the grasp of an unseen evil force. The movie suspensefully builds to the moment when the two stories will finally intersect, setting the stage for a shocking and unforgettable climax.

After an innocent lapse in judgment, Vicki Maloney is randomly abducted by the disturbed couple. With her murder imminent, Vicki realizes she must find a way to drive a wedge between Evelyn and John if she is to survive. Hounds of Love is an exercise in expertly-crafted tension, offering a bold, challenging debut from writer/director Ben Young.

Opens Friday 19th (1hr 28min)
Comedy/ Drama/ Fantasy (IMDB)
A pitch black, wryly British comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe, "Prevenge" follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree that's as funny as it is vicious. It's her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth's actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood. "Prevenge" marks the directorial debut from Lowe, who is a triple threat, writing, directing, and acting in the film during her own pregnancy.

Cat Power!

Wildlife preservationist Hank lives harmoniously alongside a menagerie of untamed animals, including cheetahs, elephants, lions and tigers on a preservation in the African plains.
