I must admit I'm a little surprised by how many different events are going on in the bay area this week. May is off to a great start!
This is the second week of the David Lynch fest at the Roxie Theatre, with screenings of The Art Life every day through Friday. There will also be Lynch shorts and other films sprinkled throughout.
Towards the end of the week, the Yerba Buena theatre will be kicking off their Cat Power lineup, which features cats in both horror and non-horror films. I can't tell you guys how excited I am for this.
And finally, we end the week with the VOD release of a film we we're lucky enough to watch during last year's Another Hole in the Head film fest, Another Evil. This was a surprising horror comedy that I don't think anyone saw coming. Hopefully we'll see it on Bluray Tuesday sometime soon.

In a crazy spoof of heroic monster movies that spawned two sequels, The Toxic Avenger is about the transformation of a mild-mannered, scrawny janitor into a thundering, muscular hero out for justice, morality, and in one case, a bit of sex. Melvin (Mark Torgl) has a job as a custodian at a work-out club where his humiliating treatment by the musclebound reaches an ugly climax in which Melvin is forced to jump out of a window. He lands in a toxic waste truck, and by some miracle of modern pollution he is transformed into a pumped-up monster, heretofore known as the Toxic Avenger (Mitchell Cohen). From that moment on, TA saves damsels and others in distress by some pretty gory mauling and maiming but finds his moment of fulfillment too.

Before he was a filmmaker, David Lynch was an art student, a painter. His film work grew out of painting, not cinephilia, and his first film, Six Men Getting Sick (1967) is in a very real sense, a “motion picture”. Lynch’s early shorts are fascinating because they’re not indebted to conventional movies. They are explorations of shape and light, texture, form and sound, and they open up the first crack into the feverish anxieties, the abiding sense of dread and disgust that runs as a malevolent undercurrent throughout Lynch’s cinema.

This surreal nightmare examines male paranoia. Our hero and title character, Henry, faces a number of horrifying obstacles in meeting someone of the opposite sex, meeting her parents, and procreating. Produced during a one-and-a-half-year period while director David Lynch was a student at the American Film Institute, the film launched him as a major new talent admired by cinephiles and filmmakers all over the world. It stands today as a milestone in personal, independent filmmaking.
