Screenings in the Bay (Monday to Friday): The Bye Bye Man, Cold Fish, Paul Verhoeven Tribute (Day 1)

Hey guys! Hope everyone's week had a smooth start, and I hope you're all ready for a crazy movie lineup for the next couple of days! This will be the second consecutive week we're getting a noteworthy new release, and this time around it's the repeatedly delayed The Bye Bye Man, which will get an early release on Thursday. Say what you will about the trailer, but I'm always happy to see movies starring Doug Jones ☺
I'm also interested in seeing Videofilia (And Other Viral Syndromes) which will be playing only a couple of times at the Roxie. It's not exactly horror but what I've seen has definitely piqued my interest. The week ends with day one of the Midnites for Maniacs tribute to Paul Verhoeven, which consists of a double feature of two iconic 90's films: Total Recall and Basic Instinct. But that's not all this week has in store...

Opening This Week

The Bye Bye Man (2017)
Early Screenings Thursday 12th (1hr 36min)
Opens Friday 13th
Horror (RottenTomatoes)
People commit unthinkable acts every day. Time and again, we grapple to understand what drives a person to do such terrible things. But what if all of the questions we're asking are wrong? What if the cause of all evil is not a matter of what...but who? From the producer of Oculus and The Strangers comes The Bye Bye Man, a chilling horror-thriller that exposes the evil behind the most unspeakable acts committed by man. When three college friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, they discover that there is only one way to avoid his curse: don't think it, don't say it. But once the Bye Bye Man gets inside your head, he takes control. Is there a way to survive his possession? Debuting on Friday, January 13th, this film redefines the horror that iconic date represents-stretching our comprehension of the terror this day holds beyond our wildest nightmares.

Terror Tuesday

Tuesday 10th @ 10:15pm (2hrs 24min)
Crime/ Drama/ Horror (IMDB)
From Sion Sono, the director of Love Exposure and Suicide Club. Cold Fish has won acclaim at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. In the film, mild-mannered Shamoto's teenage daughter gets caught shoplifting. A generous fellow fish-store owner and his wife appear to help resolve the situation by having her work at their fish store. Too good to be true? You bet! Shamoto soon discovers the horrific truth about this seemingly perfect couple...who inextricably weave him into their grisly rituals. Inspired by true events, Cold Fish is a twisted, brutal, blood-soaked drama that reveals the underlying insanity of an ordinary man pushed well beyond the brink. -- (C) Bloody Disgusting

Weird Wednesday

Wednesday 11th @ 10:15pm (1hr 33min)
Comedy (RottenTomatoes)
Set over the course of a weekend tournament for chess software programmers thirty-some years ago, this film transports viewers to a nostalgic moment when the contest between technology and the human spirit seemed a little more up for grabs. We get to know the eccentric geniuses possessed of the vision to teach a metal box to defeat man, literally, at his own game, laying the groundwork for artificial intelligence as we know it and will come to know it in the future.

The Handmaiden (2016)
Tuesday 10th @ 5:30 & 8:30 (2hrs 47min)
Arthouse/ Drama/ Romance (RottenTomatoes)
From PARK Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE, THIRST and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama inspired by the novel 'FINGERSMITH' by British author Sarah Waters. Having transposed the story to 1930s-era colonial Korea and Japan, Park presents a gripping and sensual tale of a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but who is secretly involved in a conman's plot to defraud her of her large inheritance. Powered by remarkable performances from KIM Min-hee (RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN) as Lady Hideko, HA Jung-woo (THE CHASER) as the conman who calls himself the Count and sensational debut actress KIM Tae-ri as the maid Sookee, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with PARK Chan-wook's singular vision and energy to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

Also Screening at the New Parkway Theatre Monday & Wednesday

Dune (1984)
Thursday 12th @ 9pm (2hrs 17min)
Sci-Fi/ Fantasy (RottenTomatoes)
A Duke's son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father's evil nemesis when they assassinate his father and free their desert world from the emperor's rule.

Art House/ Comedy/ Drama/ Sci-Fi (RottenTomatoes)
VIDEOFILIA (and Other Viral Syndromes) begins with a teenage misfit spending her first days out of school slacking, experimenting with drugs and cyberspace. She meets Junior online. He's an aspiring amateur porn dealer, who's into conspiracy theories and is convinced that the Mayan Apocalypse is happening. Once they meet in the 'real world,' a series of bizarre events unfold in this contemporary non-love story portraying postmodern Lima as a glitchy computer virus full of corruption, psychedelia and ancient ruins.

Tuesday 10th @ 9:30pm (1hr 24min)
Thursday 12th @ 9:15pm
Animation/ Drama/ Sci-Fi/ Romance (RottenTomatoes)
This well-crafted Japanese animated feature adapts the novel Belladonna by Jules Michelet in a unique manner. The story concerns a love affair, taking place in the Middle Ages, shadowed by witch-trials and the Inquisition. The actual moments of the story are shown in more-or-less still tableaux, but the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters are fully animated. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Wednesday 11th @ 9:30pm (2hrs)
Drama/ Horror/ Mystery/ Susense (RottenTomatoes)
Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her Gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the '60s, THE LOVE WITCH explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.
