Werewolf Appreciation Marathon at the YBCA

Tucked away in a futuristic glass building in downtown San Francisco is the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts movie theater. It first came to our attention a couple of years ago, when Midnites for Maniacs hosted a Maniac Cop triple feature, with director William Lustig there in person sharing stories and answering questions between each feature. The event was sponsored by Spoke Art, and they were selling a limited, numbered print, which William was happy to sign.

Since this amazing initial event, the YBCA has only continued programming awesome events like a Gothic cinema lineup, a black and white Kubrick lineup, and a Cronenberg lineup. They actually just started showing three of Frederick Wiseman's confrontational documentaries, but I'll talk more about those during the next screenings in the bay. However, there is something else I wanted to give you guys advanced notice of...

During this week's Terror Tuesday screening of Silver Bullet, Dave Robson from the YBCA helped introduce the film and also let us in on an upcoming event that they have in the works to celebrate Halloween. Since vampires and zombies are already so heavily saturated in our pop culture, the program director over at the YBCA decided to pay tribute to one of the lesser known monsters; the werewolf. So this October 29th, the Yerba Buena Theatre will be having a werewolf appreciation marathon, and there are definitely some classics on the list. The first three films will be shown in 35mm, and the fourth will be dcp. Here's the lineup:

Teen Wolf (1985)
Fantasy/ Cult (1hr 32min)
"When high school nerd Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) learns from his father, Harold (James Hampton), that being a werewolf runs in the family, he decides to take advantage of his freakish trait. With his newfound strength and agility, Scott quickly becomes the hero of his school's basketball team while winning over longtime crush Pamela Wells (Lorie Griffin). As he grows more popular, Scott worries he is being celebrated as a novelty rather than for who he is."

The Wolf Man (1941)
Drama/ Fantasy/ Horror (1hr 11min)
"When his brother dies, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) returns to Wales and reconciles with his father (Claude Rains). While there, he visits an antique shop and, hoping to impress Gwen (Evelyn Ankers), the attractive shopkeeper, buys a silver walking cane. That same night he kills a wolf with it, only to later learn that he actually killed a man (Bela Lugosi). A gypsy (Maria Ouspenskaya) explains that it was her son, a werewolf, that he killed, and that Larry is now one himself."

Ginger Snaps (2000)
Drama/ Fantasy/ Horror
"The story of two outcast sisters, Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins), in the mindless suburban town of Bailey Downs. On the night of Ginger's first period, she is savagely attacked by a wild creature. Ginger's wounds miraculously heal but something is not quite right. Now Brigitte must save her sister and save herself."

Wolf Cop (2014)
Comedy/ Horror (1hr 19min)
"An alcoholic cop blacks out and wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, and crime scenes seem oddly familiar when the full moon is out."

This marathon will be starting at 1pm, will have a dinner intermission, and is only $15! I'll keep an eye out for tickets and let you guys know as soon as I find out more info!
