Treasures From The ComiCombs

Once again we’re back for my favorite day, new comic book day. This week is a big one for all genres. Whether you like heroes, horror, or just about anything else between. There are a lot of great books being released today so read on to find out which three I’m recommending and also which two new books will be going head to head.

Clean Room #6 (Vertigo)

Writer – Gail Simone

Artist – John Davis-Hunt

I picked the first issue up based on a preview and I have been enjoying this book since. Issue #6 sees the first story arc coming to a close. I can’t wait to see what Gail Simone has in store. “Chloe discovers the brutal truth behind her fiance's suicide and faces a visit from someone called the Surgeon who intends on using his scalpel for different reasons. Astrid proves herself to be both friend and foe in this chilling end to the first arc.”

3 Devils #1 (IDW)

Writer – Bo Hampton

Artist – Bo Hampton

This was a surprise pick for me, as I don’t know too much about this book. I was immediately drawn in when I read “supernatural western” and I just love to see books where the writer and artist are one and the same. “3 Devils is a high-action, supernatural western that centers around a pact of vengeance sworn by a tragically orphaned Gypsy girl, an ex-slave with no soul, and a carnival freak billed as the Human Wolf. Gaining strength and courage from each other, they set off across the Old West-in search of the three hideous, inhuman entities that caused their torment and haunt their lives.”

Monstress #4 (Image)

Writer - Marjorie Liu

Artist - Sana Takeda

Monstress has been a regular in my pull list since day one. The first issue covered a lot and this book has since found its stride. Marjorie Liu has created a world with a rich history and it’s always a pleasant surprise to see where it is going. Sana Takeda delivers some amazing art in this series and it’s worth picking up just to see some of the coolest pages this year.

I hope you all enjoyed reading about Bigfoot and The Nail last week as much as I enjoyed reading them. This week I have two new books going head to head with some classic horror monsters that I’m excited to check out.

Ferals Vol. 01

by David Lapham and Gabriel Andrade
(Avatar Press)

“Officer Dale Chesnutt is a lawman with a big, bloody problem. Slaughtered civilians are turning up in the sleepy town of Cypress, and the burden falls on him to end the carnage. But no sooner does he begin his investigation than he finds himself violently drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman and a vicious creature strikes again at Dale's own family. Hidden among the faces on Cypress streets, unrecognizable to neighbors and friends, a culture of werewolves dating back a thousand years has found their ancient secrets threatened and worth tearing their enemies to pieces for.”

American Vampire Vol. 01
By Scott Snyder, Steven King and Rafael Albuquerque (Vertigo)

“This first volume of the critically acclaimed series collects issues #1-5 and follows two stories: one written by Scott Snyder and one written by Stephen King, both with art by superstar Rafael Albuquerque.
Snyder's tale follows Pearl, a young woman living in 1920s Los Angeles, who is brutally turned into a vampire and sets out on a path of righteous revenge against the European monsters who tortured and abused her.
And in King's story set in the days of America's Wild West, readers learn the origin of Skinner Sweet, the original American vampire - a stronger, faster creature than any vampire ever seen before.”

I’m really excited to dive into these books. This one is going to be a tough choice, so make sure to be back here next week when I’ll reveal which book I will be adding to the ever growing collection that is the ComiCombs!
