Bluray Tuesday: Featuring King Arthur, Teen Wolf & The Dinner

Bluray Tuesday arrives once again. A bit of a lighter week compared to last week's releases, but there are some cool additions you can add to your growing collections. Scream Factory releases two collector's editions this week, Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf Too. The original Teen Wolf is classic I remember watching as a kid but I don't recall the sequel too much. I look forward to checking these out this week with the all new transfers and bonus material. The Dinner is next up for today. The Dinner is not one for everyone I'd say. I expected more from the cast of this caliber. The acting is great and story line definitely deals with issues of today's time. The ending did kind of upset me but I still understand why it had to end the way it did. On to the bigger releases today we have a King Arthur reboot called King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword and Snatched, a comedy starring Amy Schumer and veteran actress Goldie Hawn who play daughter and mother. Are you guys ready for a horror heavy week? Do I even have to ask?
The next couple of days are filled with sharks, snakes, obsession, dangerous apps, and a certain backstory many of us have been waiting to learn about. Yes, it's Annabelle: Creation week, and I'm personally excited for this new addition to the Conjuring world, regardless of how I felt about Annabelle (which was a bit forgettable but I didn't hate). And this installation is directed by David Sandberg, who made Lights Out and has a pretty distinct feel to his camerawork, so I'm interested to see the crossover. But until we can talk about that, we've got some found footage with [REC] on Terror Tuesday, 70's Snakes for Weird Wednesday, and the 1999 The Mummy screening in the East bay. And some cool VOD releases on top of all that!

The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses at Davies Symphony Hall

Last Friday I went to the Davies Symphony Hall next to the San Francisco Civic Center and saw The Legend of Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses. This was my third symphony event in the past two months and it was also the one I was looking forward to the most, the other two having been Pixar in Concert and Disney/Pixar: A Musical Journey into Animation. I really, really love going to the symphony because our orchestra is amazing and it's a really unique way of watching movies that I've found myself enjoying much more than just sitting down in a theater.

Above is a picture from where I was sitting. I've decided to aim for seats in this section because the pricing isn't super expensive and for the events like these where you watch what's on the screen you get a great view of both the screen and the orchestra. For the Zelda symphony I actually ended up going by myself because when I went to get the tickets there was only about ten left and none of them were together so I just got myself a ticket. I didn't have any worse of a time because I was alone, but walking through and taking Bart to San Francisco by myself for the first time was a bit unnerving. The Davies Symphony Hall is really beautiful inside and out, and very accommodating. They sometimes set up exhibits about the event happening inside, like for the Pixar one they had a concept art gallery for some of the movies. You can also bring food and drinks into the hall.

The Zelda Symphony isn't anything particularly new. I believe they've been doing this since around 2011 and I went last year, but they continually add new pieces to the show. This year featured a Breath of the Wild arrangement to feature the new game's music and it was amazing. I couldn't even really remember what music was in the game because of how quiet and understated it is, but when they performed it, it brought back all of my memories and made me want to replay it again. The conductor this year was also great because of how enthusiastic he was; he kept turning around after a song to smile at the audience and used the plastic replica Windwaker baton they sold for the Windwaker part of the show. The whole place was excited to be there, people were dressed up in cosplay and would cheer whenever someone was shown on the screen. It gave the event a really fun, lighthearted atmosphere. 

The other two symphonies I went to had more of an emphasis on film and actually brought in some of Disney/Pixar's top producers to talk about the movies they had worked on and how the music for the movies was brought to life. I loved the Disney symphony mainly because they played a lot of the anthems from the princess movies. I love Pixar just as much as Disney, but they don't have that many princesses. The Disney symphony featured Don Hanh who produced Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, and the Pixar symphony featured Ronnie Del Carmen, who co-directed Inside Out. These two symphonies were basically snippets of various Disney/Pixar movies and the soundtracks were entirely orchestrated. They showed the first fifteen minutes from Up both times and that brought everyone to tears because of how nice the music was and how sad those first fifteen minutes are. 

All in all I think everyone should head down to the symphony hall at least once in their lives. They do regular symphonies and they also do even more film centered events. One other thing I was considering going to was North by Northwest, where they show the film but the music is played by the orchestra. I think this is a really easy way to get out of the house and enjoy yourself, and if you're tired of watching movies in the theater you can come and watch them here! For a much higher price, but it includes the symphony experience after all.

Screenings in the Bay (Friday to Sunday): The Dark Tower, 68 Kill, The Untamed

It is the weekend of VOD releases here in the bay area, but luckily they have not squeezed out the theatrical ones all together! Stephen King's The Dark Tower is easily the biggest release today, but if you ask me The Untamed is much more exciting. Its first screening is tonight at 7pm and will be followed by a Skype Q&A with the director. And we have a new addition to the VOD releases coming out today which we found out about from the guest of the 50th episode of The Overlook Hour. 68 Kill is a dark comedy written by Trent Haaga (Dead Girl, Cheap Thrills) and has definitely piqued my interest!

It's because for episode 50, the guys call all the way out to New Orleans to talk to William Spataro, who is responsible for the special effects in 68 Kill! Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Phoenix Forgotten, Slither & House on Willow Street

It's that time of week again and first week of the new month. Lots of collection worthy releases come out today. Scream Factory releases three John Carpenter steelbooks with new artwork. The releases are The Fog, They Live and Escape From New York. Scream Factory also releases new indie horror film House on Willow Street, which was pretty good in my opinion. I'm hoping this release comes with a cool slip cover. A found footage horror film that was in theaters earlier this year hits retailer shelves today too. It's based on true events and titled Phoenix Forgotten. If you missed our review of this one check it out here. James Gunn, known for the Guardians of The Galaxy films, put out a horror comedy in 2006 called Slither and Scream Factory is releasing this as apart of their collector's edition series, loaded with bonus features and new scan. 90's child horror film The Good Son finally hits bluray for the first time. I loved this one growing up and can't wait to re watch in HD. Last year's Shin Godzilla is finally released today and has gotten great reviews. This is one I'm looking forward to checking out as well. 80's indie horror One Dark Night is released from Code Red and on bluray for the first time.
