Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Basket Case, Coco & The Sect

The last Bluray Tuesday of February has arrived. This week is filled with Disney titles as well as horror releases out for the first time on Bluray. There are also several Oscar nominated films on the list. Arrow Video re-releases  cult classic film Basket Case in their collector's line with new features to check out. I like this film and am looking forward to this upgrade. The Sect is released for the first time on Bluray this week. I haven't heard of this one but it sounds interesting. Agatha Christie's whodunit thriller Murder on the Orient Express hits shelves today in both Bluray and 4K platforms. I missed this in theaters and it got mixed reviews but this is another one I am interested in checking out. Disney releases two films today: Coco and the next in the collector's signature line, Lady and the Tramp with digital copies released for the first time. Both Disney releases have retailer exclusives. Best Buy will carry a steelbook packaging for both and Target's exclusive is a storybook packaging. Rounding out this week is Prey from Vinegar Syndrome, highly reviewed Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and 78/52 Hitchcock's Shower Scene documentary from Scream Factory. As Found Footage February begins to wind down, and March is just over the hump of this week, all of the awesome local festivals on the horizon are coming into focus. And March has some very cool stuff up its sleeves 😏

The Great Bigfoot Bonanza of 2018 is just under two weeks away! As a veteran of its freshman year I can tell you that this is not what you're probably expecting. You aren't walking into a room full of squachers who plan to argue their views all weekend, but rather you are joining a celebration of legendary monsters who spark your imagination, inspire great film and memorable art. It's a party, and you should be a part of it! So come to the Vogue Theatre March 10th and 11th and try something new.

But before February is officially over, we have some things to talk about. Basket Case is going to be playing at the Alamo Drafthouse this Terror Tuesday! Yes, really! I love this movie and cannot wait to hear that trademark guttural Belial attack cry on those crazy Alamo speakers.

The Super Shangri-La Show will be presenting Island of the Fishmen this Wednesday at the Balboa Theatre! And at the end of the week the Roxie Theatre will kick off The Lullaby, which will be screening for several days. And there's nothing like a new horror movie in the Little Roxie on a Friday night.

She then spends the rest of the film discovering the joys of interstellar sex with a keeper of feral children (Ugo Tognazzi), a blind, beatific angel (John Phillip Law), and an inept revolutionary named Dildano (David Hemmings). Slowly but surely, she also finds her way to Durand Durand by moving from one exotic, Wizard of Oz-style locale to another. Along the way, she meets the kindly Professor Ping (a surprisingly verbal Marcel Marceau), a Eurotrash dominatrix named the Great Tyrant (Rolling Stones gal pal Anita Pallenberg), and the Concierge (Milo O'Shea), a strangely familiar lackey of the Great Tyrant who tries to destroy Barbarella with his great big organ of love.

This is an unusual entry in the knights-in-armor genre. Set in medieval England, the film follows the exploits of a young swordsman, Talon (Lee Horsley). Working as a mercenary knight, Talon possesses a unique three-bladed sword which fires its two extra blades when he touches a button. By chance, Talon learns that he is a prince who has forgotten his royal heritage. Using his sword and his wiles, he attempts to regain control of his kingdom, which has been taken over by a sadistic tyrannical knight and an evil sorcerer. In doing so, he can save a princess who has been taken hostage by the usurpers. Comedy is interspersed with gory and licentious drama throughout the film, which was directed and written by Albert Pyun.

Does it feel like the weeks are getting shorter or is it just me? Well, either way, I'm happy that Friday is here and that we have some exciting things on the horizon!

This weekend the Overlook is getting its hands into all kinds of stuff... figuratively, of course. It starts after the 9pm screening of Are We Not Cats at the Roxie Theatre. This showtime will be followed by a Skype Q&A with writer/director Xander Robin, which will be hosted by the Overlook Hour's very own Clark Little. And believe me, after you watch this surreal, body horror romance story, you'll have your fair share of questions! You can also check out the bonus episode of the Overlook Hour Podcast on iTunes or Stitcher, where the guys start the conversation with Xander.

Then on Sunday, Overlook reviewer and podcast co-host, Madeleine, returns to the Video Vortex stage to introduce Tammy and the T-Rex to a sold out theatre! So if you don't have tickets already you're probably sitting this one out.

Once Marc realizes that he is a target for the killer, he seeks help from Giordani (Glauco Mauri), a professor of the paranormal, who soon becomes one of the killer's victims. Marc's research leads him to an abandoned house where he discovers a secret room that hides a corpse. Before he can call the cops, he is knocked out and awakens to find the place in flames while Gianna holds him. Racing to the neighbors to call for help, Marc discovers an important clue that leads him to a nearby school where he finally finds the killer's identity. The madman attacks him, but the police arrive to save Marc. A bizarre entry even for an area of film that specializes in the offbeat, this is the story of an ideal teenage couple, a cheerleader and a jock, who are abruptly separated when a jealous rival slays the footballer. At the hospital, a crazed doctor transplants the young man's brain into that of a giant robotic dinosaur as part of his immortality-via-cobras experiment. Unfortunately, the newly transplanted boyfriend is most unhappy with his new form and with the way things have turned out in general, so he goes on a bloody rampage for revenge. When he finds the cheerleader, he is somehow able to convey his plight to her. She and a pal decide to help him by finding a new body in which to place his brain (his old one was beyond repair). While the low-budget Tammy and the T-Rex has been for some reason marketed as a family-oriented comedy, parents beware. There is a lot of blood, violence, crude sexual innuendo and a striptease scene.

The host of this gathering is a transvestite clad in lingerie, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a mad scientist who claims to be from another planet.

This British film examines the choices individuals must make when confronted with a romantic relationship which is rewarding but does not offer them everything they want. In this sympathetic and psychologically precise drama, Alexandra Greville (Glenda Jackson), "Alex" to her friends, has a younger man as her sometime lover, the young sculptor Bob Elkin (Murray Head). Elkin is completely open about the fact that he is also the lover of her acquaintance, Dr. Daniel Hirsch (Peter Finch). These relationships continue in some kind of equilibrium until Alex and Bob agree to house-sit the children of a couple known to the three of them. In their roles, neither Head nor Finch "swished," or otherwise catered to homosexual stereotypes, and theirs was considered to be a groundbreaking, sympathetic portrayal of this kind of relationship, not condescending in any way. One highlight of the film is a scene in which Dr. Hirsch attends the Bar Mitzvah of his nephew. This critically well-received movie was unexpectedly successful at the box office. The film's director and screenwriter, as well as Jackson and Finch, were nominated for Academy Awards.

Midnight Bloom - "I had very high hopes for American Satan, just because Andy Black from Black Veil Brides and Ben Bruce from Asking Alexandria are in the movie. I loved the cast, soundtrack, and concept of the movie but hated how almost every other scene was a sex scene throughout the entire movie. If only The Relentless was a real band, I think they would be cool. Overall I'd give this movie a 3.5, it’s a movie I could rewatch if I was bored and it’s just out of the ordinary. Would I recommend this movie? Sure, to anyone who wants to watch something fresh." - 3.5 Stars

Math Mage - "This is the worst movie I have ever seen. It's as if someone wrote the movie about Dethklok but knew nothing about Metalocalypse except that it existed. So they threw together some devil movie cliches and some rock band cliches with some preposterous anti-religious* nonsense with dialogue written by autocomplete, mumbled by skeleton people as they jump cut their way through what scenery Malcolm McDowell hadn't chewed yet. Clearly wins the prize for most scene changes without establishing shots (especially irritating with how inconsistent the time/place/stages are) they clearly believe in their 'progressive message' not cognizant of their hypocrisy; 'we solved bullying with murder... The Great Hornito - "American Satan feels like a Disney channel movie that actually shows the sex and drug use scenes, not just suggest them. This movie is emo hipster heaven, but for me, it feels more like my worst nightmare. The acting is terrible. The writing is even worse. The music is not that bad but worst of all the movie is really boring. The only good thing to come out of this movie was the Deal with the Devil cover contest they had on YouTube." - 2 Stars

Lord Battle - "It's hard to describe American Satan. It's got the excited mood of a Rags to Riches story, but tonally is impossible to navigate; the film turns murder into a joke and bullying into an epidemic, plays up sexual situations in a classic boys club style. This is what I found the most offensive, and not because I go looking for these type of cultural insensitivities but because I was genuinely haunted by the way they handled the groupie character losing her virginity. This could have been a "girls like sex too" moment and been fine. Instead, it plays out like this: said groupie appears with her mom at the tour bus. Goldberg (yes the pro wrestler) is persuaded by her mother to let her daughter in to lose her virginity (this is played for laughs). The groupie walks to the back of the bus and finds our hero being emo  (he's crying about his girlfriend catching him in the act of cheating or something (it's the Devils' fault, so we can still like him) who she then forcefully seduces. We then see her mom flirting with one of the bandmates outside the door. Cut back to inside the room and the groupie has been turned around, while our emo hero is forcefully granting her wish. While this is happening there is one very low camera angle centered on the groupies' ankles, it's unclear why we are lingering here until blood runs down her leg... The way this was shot inspires negative emotions, which isn't out of the ordinary since this whole film, again, lacks tonal cohesion. The groupie then leaves the back room and is greeted by her mom bouncing on the lap of the bandmate she was speaking with earlier. This breaks the groupie's heart, as she pulls her mom off the bus crying. We later see the mother-daughter duo at home with their police officer father, just long enough to see dad shoot himself in the head... Why?! Is this an awkward VH1 rock and roll history propaganda film, an elaborate commercial for a band, or just a poorly thought-out cool guy film that has more collateral damage than The Relentless' deal with the Devil? Who cares, don't watch it." - 1 Star

Wandering Panda - "A dirty pile of trash and excrement. American Satan has no right to ever exist. Whoever made this movie had no idea what they were doing. Oh and this is almost 3 hours!!! What in the absolute orgy fuck were they thinking?! Do not, I repeat do not watch this movie, it will make you want to kill yourself." - 1 Star

Huntress - "Even if you look past the dumb name and high school fantasy plot, American Satan is just a badly made movie. It’s confused; the mechanical monologues spewing from these awful characters seem to be telling you that fame is evil, but every so often someone else will come in and drop some Rollingstone Magazine trivia about how many records Black Sabbath sold in the 70’s or something. There was not a single strong personality or remotely likable person in this movie, and the fact that they don’t all die is almost as upsetting as the weird orgy scenes I cringed through. And they can't blame budget or lack of star power, because just about everyone in this mess is known for something else. American Satan was unforgettably and unapologetically awful and there’s nothing but a douchy smirk waiting for you at the end of it. I don’t regret watching it, but I almost wish I could forget it happened." - 1 Star

Bluray Tuesday: Featuring Gate 2, Mom & Dad & American Satan

It's that time of week again! This week is a bit lighter than the last with a few different titles released today. First up is Mom & Dad an intense horror thriller about the parents in town attacking their children. I'm definitely looking forward to picking this up this week. Scream Factory is releasing Gate 2 for the first time on Bluray with a few new features as well as a new scan. It's cool, we get the sequel to coincide with the first one that Vestron Video released last year. Indie horror film American Satan is next up to release today. I haven't seen the best reviews for this one but I do want to check it out in the near future. What I have seen great reviews for is The Florida Project, which hits shelves today from A24. I missed this in theaters but have heard nothing but good things. If you like Will Farrell films, his sequel to Daddy's Home, Daddy's Home 2 is released on Bluray and 4K today. The first one was just okay for me but I'm looking forward to watching this sequel. Rounding out the week is Scalpel from Arrow Video and The Night Walker.
