The Overlook Hour Guest Profile: Savage People

If you're deep into the bay area DIY community, chances are you've heard of Savage People. The community consists of a group of like-minded and complementary people, who collaborate to organize events and bring elements that they feel are missing from the bay area indie/ music scene.

Their current project is the first, hopefully annual, San Francisco Punk Metal Flea Market, which will be taking place this Sunday, Novemeber 13th at the DNA Lounge. There will be live music and over 35 vendors.

Two memebers of Savage People visited the Disney Dungeon to talk about their upcoming flea market, what they've done in the past, and what they're planning for the future. Before you head to the their episode of The Overlook Hour, get to know a little bit more about the group.

Overlook: Savage People is a very DIY group that reaches a lot of different media levels. What originally brought you guys together and when did that happen?

Savage People: We were all just friends before. We were hosting shows individually, printing merch for ourselves, and we finally realized that we could be doing all that for other people. So we decided to start Savage People to do what we were already doing, but on a bigger scale. As time progressed, we got into music, screen printing, film, photography, comics, sfx makeup, web design, animation, podcasts, just anything that interested us. This all started 3 years ago now and we've been learning and growing ever since.

Overlook: What is the group's goal? What kind of things do you hope to achieve?

SP: Our goal is bringing the community together through art. We do this by both providing a platform, like events, to show what they do and providing affordable services to create products. We make products for people, but when it comes down to it, our favorite things to do are host shows and sell at events because it allows us to really engage, talk to, and inspire everyone around us and show them that they can make anything they set their minds to as long as they have the passion and the drive for it. We hope that the SF Punk-Metal Flea Market that blew up way bigger than ever anticipated, will help us realize this goal as it is finally giving us the exposure we need for more people too see what we're doing and bring a change to the community.

Overlook: What advice do you have for similar grass roots groups in the bay area?

SP: Some advice we would give to similar grassroots groups in the bay area is that building something like Savage People doesn't come over night. It's only done by learning from mistakes. Yours, but even more so the people around you. It helps to learn things from people that have already done the same thing you're doing and also to keep your eyes open to things that you don't like rather than shutting it out so that you see what you don't want to do or become. Things you see are only bad for you if you let them affect you.

Also, be professional about things. We notice a lot of times, there will be people trying to build something of their own, and just think getting on something or knowing someone is going to get them where they need to go. When you are a part of something like an event, if you don't seem to support what's going on, you don't help out, you don't interact with the people around you, and you only stick around when it's your time to shine, it really seems like you don't care about what you do or the community, which is the whole reason for having events. When you're passionate about what you do and that you're not just stuck in your own little bubble, it really shows.

We just hope to inspire everyone in the DIY community and have a blast along the way.

Overlook: What are you working on now?

SP: We are finishing post production of our "kung fu" music video: Silent But Deadly. It should be releasing soon. No exact date set on that yet.

New Hemorage Album/Pariah Comic
Hemorage is working on finishing their new album/comic release of Pariah Issue #2 to be released early next year.

The Residuals will be releasing first full length: Born Blind within December or January.

In January, we will begin production of an animated short of our comic Pariah Issue #1 as pre-production is nearing completion. The Pariah series will likely be a 3-4 series comic and we are making an animated short of the comic along side it. The basic plot/story of the series has been laid out, so since it's a short series, we decided an animated version would be able to be done.

We have some new short film ideas, so you can look forward to seeing some short films being worked on next year.

Other than that, we will be hosting shows around San Francisco as usual, and if the SF Punk-Metal Flea Market turns out successful, we will try to make this a yearly event.

Overlook: How can people get in contact with you?

SP: We're on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. You can also email us at savagepeoplesf@gmail.com.
